As chance would have it, i'm working my way through a pile of cassettes and putting them up on Tape Media World and i've found that I have a few Fame issues that i will put up tomorrow with images
unfortunately, like the LP's there is nothing in the inners to give a release date, although someone on Discogs has put a 1987 reissue date on the Buzzcocks one.
Do you know if the gaining of the extra digits coincides with the addition of barcodes, and if it's related?
Kate Bush - Lionheart has one and i've recently added it to the entry. Unfortunately a lot of barcodes don't get entered here so it won't be easy to check if there are no good sleeve images.

I think all the info we can gather is going to help put dates on these...
It's like having a few missing pieces to a jigsaw: only when you put together what you can, do you see the shape the missing pieces make, and what kind of picture is on them, then you can start the process of looking for that kind of piece (As you then know what you're looking for)
There's a couple of things that are already perplexing me: I've seen a lot of labels in the past couple of days, and most, even the later ones on the cat sequence, have the earliest light brown/red checked label design... so maybe Neil Forbes is right, and they were not released in chronological order, even though they may hae been designated cat numbers according to a pre-determined scheme.
This will reveal itself as we go though.
(Also wonder if the CD and possibly tape equivalents (with same cat No.s were released later than their vinyl counterparts).
More to add to the list later today (More holes appearing in the sequence though).

well, looks like there may be something in my previous calculation of around 256 or so discs...
...around this cat number, things start getting very, very strange...
EMI label uses the Fame cat number intermittently with Fame branded issues, some seem only to be available on cassette or CD about here, and there is a very close link with Capitol Records, who earlier on are the only ones who insist on having their labels on the Fame discs 41 3100 1 or so (Beatles solo cluster), but don't appear again till later, around 3217-18, when all Fame issues have original label reproductions (or picture type labels) under Fame branding.
I've been getting a little cross chatter here and there with other labels (but that's just down to search engine coincidences I think).
To add to the craziness,
Hawkwind: Masters of The Universe, appears twice!
firstly at FA 3008, which is a straight up reissue of the original, but again at FA 3220, same band, and title, but not the same album... this later is a compilation!
...and, they have the same cover art!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This happens again with Motorhead: On Parole FA 3009, and FA 3251 (Same album this time, so a Fame reissue of a Fame reissue!!!)
And finally, Steve Miller Band: Sailor FA 41 3085 1, appears again as FA 3254.
Completely and utterly bonkers.
Oh, and to add to the fun, Deep Purple: Deepest Purple FA 3239 has Harvest Black and Silver reissue labels, so watch out for that one.
I think a few of these Fame issues may be quite valuable.. some because they are just in demand due to originals being super expensive themselves: Floyd : Piper, and Saucerful, etc., others just plain rare (although if anyone wants them is another matter)....
... but especially a group of four consecutive Iron Maiden issues FA 3244 -FA 3247, which have some quite healthy price tags attached to them where I've seen them for sale.
As I said around the 256 mark and after, it moves more to cassettes and CDs, so just going to work on what I have for the moment, before going any further.

And that's as far as I'm going for now, as the label seems essentially to disolve, some purely EMI labels, others only found on CD or Tape, and vinyl is uncertainty.

Now I've got a scheme I'm going to apply dates with, to see if this throws up any patterns or anomalies.
Essentially I'll begin by removing the titles from my saved list, and just apply original album release dates (original labels) to see if this has any determining factor, then I'll add "known" dates, and compare the two for discrepancies, agreement, or other oddness-es. Finally, I'll start a chart for label designs, and cross reference these (and the inner sleeve dates) with these applied sets of dates.
Have faith brothers and sisters of the reissue label: Fame, I'm confident a pattern will emerge, and the facts known!

Oh dear lord, what a can of woims I've opened with this label!
Just for fun, I thought I'd pick a title from the catalogue as a kind of case study, to see what kind of labels would be on it...
I chose Pink Floyd's Piper at the gates of Dawn.
and I've noticed something.
What I (and I think we) have been thinking is that the earliest light brown with red grid is simply the early label... and indeed, I was initially pleased just to see this label on Piper...
Then I noticed the Coloured Vinyl editions of it on Fame, so far a Red vinyl, Green Vinyl, and a Grey Vinyl (This last colour, along with a yellow vinyl is available on the two box Columbia label too)...
But I noticed the "light brown" label wasn't "light brown", but actually white, with red grid.
So I looked at other labels I previous thought were light brown, but turn out to be actually white, with red grid, along side other copies which do have light brown with red grid.
The difference in these two labels in terms of tone, is muinute, and could easily be put down to a scanning difference, or trick of the light, but I am sure it is a separate label type now.... so where on earth that will end up fitting in the scheme, and what it does to the other label is anybody's guess at the moment!
So we have a light brown with red grid (commonest type), white label with red grid, yellow label with red grid, plain light brown, a darker plain Brown, and then original label reproduction labels....
... and I hadn't even thought about coloured vinyls (Please say there are no picture discs!)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Further perusal reveals a distinguishing feature of these white with red grid labels... they have the source label logo on them somewhere... and sense would say that these are precursors to the plain labels with source logos, before the complete shift to original label reproductions.
(the earliest light brown with red grid have only Fame logo on, not source label)

I'd like to meet whoever came up with the original label scheme and punch him on the nose!
(The image of a collection of chimpanzees in a comittee room comes to mind when thinkng who oversaw this mess)
Mind you, having thought a little more on the matter, more label variants could actually help matters by narrowing date ranges for individual copies of any given issue, as well as marking finer stages in the label's progression as a whole.
I did wonder if Fame only issued albums initially released on their original labels before the foundation of the Fame label itself... but then I saw the Marillion entries, which apparently blows that idea out of the water.
With regards the Kate Bush Lionheart... it could be there is a light brown, red grid label without the EMI box before this one, in which case, that's yet another, finer progression of the label design which could place it chronologically just before the white grid label, but just after the light brown grid -unboxed (Still with me?), though where the bright yellow grid unboxed label (my Floyd - Dance songs would fit then??) who knows!
Or, it could simply be that since Fame is an EMI label, and Lionheart was originally an EMI release, they put their own logo on Fame reissues of their own stuff earlier (maybe from the off). - In this case, any other Fame reissues of original EMI releases would also have this box (so something else to check out.
I can vaguely recall the arrival of Fame. Yes, it is EMI, and until then their main budget label was mfp. In the early 1980s (synthesisers, New Romantics and all that) mfp was looking decidedly naff, with its "Hot Hits" and Mrs Mills-type legacy. I assumed then, and still do, that Fame was an attempt to launch a more respectable seeming label, and break from the image of mfp. As I understand, it was for re-issues of EMI material, and stuff they controlled like UK Motown. If there can be a budget label with street cred, then this was supposed to be it.

Wasn't it just the case that MFP was their budget label, and Fame was their "mid price" label? (Not certain)
