Hill Street Blues (1981 - 1987)
James B Sikking as the awesome Howard Hunter has passed away, aged 90.
One of my favourites throughout the series.

Stax: Soulsville U.S.A. (2024)
Rated 7/10
I was incredibly eager to see this series, which had been mentioned for a couple of years and it's well worth a watch. Previous features on Stax have never disappointed, despite having to cover a vast history in one-off efforts, literally a label of two halves, - the spinning discs and the post-Otis finger clickin' era.
On-camera interviews with surviving artists and writers was very welcome, which included Stax insider and archivist Deanie Parker who's always a great listen. Great to see the makers managed to capture filmed interviews with those that have since passed, Jim Stewart of course but also the wonderful Bettye Crutcher who is often overlooked in the Stax story.
Although not everything can be captured (even Rob Bowman's welcome nineties book had to limit itself), there were a few things that jarred by their omission. The Jim and Estelle label start-up, with financing and initial Satellite imprint, yes it's been covered elsewhere but if this was the high profile final word, I expected a mention. And to book-end it, the sad ending didn't mention the promising reconvening of the MGs and subsequent murder of Al Jackson Jr before that could occur. That subject is still controversial, with plenty of speculation, but remains untold. An acknowledgement of the events should have been included at the very least.
The four parts could easily have been longer. It reminded me of watching and taping The Beatles Anthology from the initial TV broadcast and then getting the expanded version when released on sell-through, so much more. Perhaps there will be.

Philip K. Dick's Electric Dreams (2017 - Now)
This series (still just the one, so far) was made by Sony and shown on Channel 4 in the UK and Amazon in the USA. Of the ten episodes, five were shot in England and five in America.
The tie-in book contains the ten original source stories, with alternate script title where different, along with an introduction to each by the writer who adapted the story for the series.

Belated reply (6 years later!) I had no idea back then that there was a U.S. version!
The UK version was really popular, so much so that I had a tie-in board game for Christmas in the mid seventies.

The Big Match (1968 - 1992)
@Paul Vinyl, indeed, proper football. No wimpy falling over (not as much anyway) Tough guys not afraid to go for the ball. A lot of today's players wouldn't last five minutes in the seventies game. Better days as far as I'm concerned.

Although it's really a separate programme, those who watched this may enjoy The Big Match Revisited. Currently showing on TV again, this week has been from 1977...

I think I only watched the earlier episodes, but remember enjoying them. Something I didn't know back then was that the opening credits with the car are actually outtakes from one of my favourite films, On Golden Pond!

The Amazing Spider-Man (1978 - 1979)
Quick question, after last year's kerfuffle on here with Salem's Lot! The US TV movie of this came out theatrically elsewhere. I saw it in the UK, I believe Summer 1978, so are we adding or not adding to Cinema? Or is it just needing a note?

Thanks for your review Quad5point1, much appreciated. I was so looking forward to the proposed cinema release, got excited with a longer TV series, then got a serious bottom lip with a Disney exclusive (we don't have Disney+). But I eagerly await a DVD! Cheers again.

The Saturday Banana (1978 - 1979)
@club80audi1 Wow, two shows, that was lucky. We got chosen at random when lined up in the playground. I don't remember a second chance at our school, I was at Kinson School just down the road from you. The details are pretty scant on this series, not much has survived. Was the July show (ticket above) the first one, do you know?
Update note, July 2023: Peeling Banana image added. Found photo online, can't locate any further details as to photographer, date etc

I used to love this, taping them regularly on vhs here in England. I'm not sure if I caught them all though.

I used to watch reruns of this in England in the 1970s. I don't however recall seeing it in colour and we did have colour tv. Perhaps my memory is a bit off...

Great memories of staying at my Auntie's in Bedfont in the early 1970s. Sat in front of her TV with my Interceptor and SHADO Mobile watching this amazing show. And then the search for the little rocket fired from the Mobile, behind the telly, behind the couch......

Apologies for the p-poor quality of the photo (Kindle). I found my 1978 ticket squirrelled away inside my (also thought lost) 70s copy of The Incredible Journey paperback.

Mary Ann Mobley also played the role of April Dancer in one episode of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. but was replaced by Stefanie Powers when The Girl From U.N.C.L.E. got its one-season series.

The Tomorrow People (1973 - 1979)
I loved this back in the 70s and watched a few online a while back. It was the first time I'd seen it since I was a kid and it was fabulous. Unlike some shows when re-watched years later that seem tacky and dated, this was still a really great watch!

The Saturday Banana (1978 - 1979)
This series, from Southern TV's Southampton studio was a Saturday morning kids show, similar to, as in a bit mad (but not as good as) Tiswas. It featured a version of the Runaround game, popular as a standalone show at the time. It started early July 1978, when a bunch of us at school were picked at random to travel along from Bournemouth to be on one of the first ones. I do recall Marseille playing live (picked up a badge, promoting the Red, White and Slightly Blue LP) getting autographs from a football team playing outside the studio, a kid called Keith from our school winning a tv (b&w) on Runaround and cornering Melissa Wilkes and a male counterpart presenter. This lad was wearing a hat which he lost when he turned and fled from the mob of kids. For ages in the eighties I was convinced the lad was Graham Fletcher-Cook, but I've never found any mention of him presenting this! Also, there was a massive peeling banana outside, just in case we couldn't find the right studio I suppose......

Armchair Thriller (1978 - 1981)
FYI Early in the series was the story Quiet As A Nun, based on the novel by Antonia Fraser. This featured the Jemima Shore character, later to expand into a Jemima Shore Investigates series featuring Patricia Hodge in the lead role instead of Maria Aitken . This story is one of those 'behind the sofa' moments for people of a certain age (like me!)

Hill Street Blues (1981 - 1987)
My favourite series of all time, watching it right from UK start. Weird broadcasts though, from Southern ITV. Channel 4 treated it well, with their '4' logo changing blue before roll-call too, but then they made us wait for the new series by re-running all the earlier ones.. Watch out for edited episodes though (including the pilot!)
