albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - The Legendary A&M Sessions (1984) | The UK release has the same sleeve but with AMY226 catalogue number stuck to the rear. My copy has red A&M labels stating that it was "Made in England"

albert 15th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Reps Sampler (1972) | So rare its not even on Discogs yet. This could well be the first appearance of Roxy Music on actual vinyl, though not for sale.
The info sheet on Island printed paper has a hand-typed track listing, in the incorrect order, and doesn't even have the proper title for the Dick Heckstall-Smith track, instead just stating "from his album ILPS 9196 Dust In The Air Suspended Marks The Place Where A Story Ended".
The Laurie Styvers track is from a Chrysalis LP, and although Chrysalis was linked to Island originally, her Spilt Milk LP does not have an Island credit anywhere on the sleeve/inner sleeve/label. Strange.
Also check out my other Roxy Music oddity, Virginia Plain in a UK promo sleeve.

albert 20th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Impact (1968) | Just picked up a copy at the local Scouts annual jumble sale for 50 pence. It has labels like Bodston's scans and also has a flip-back 'file under POPULAR' sleeve, (in case you are wondering, I bought it for the EMI advert inner sleeve, not too rare but this one is minty).
Oh and there is writing on the sleeve "M.R.Coupland 3rd Oct 1970", so that makes two of these records with written dates, wonder if it was a trait for buyers of this kind of LP.
They had more Studio 2 Stereo including "Breakthrough" but none with inner bags that I wanted.

albert 14th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Velvet Underground And Nico - The Velvet Underground And Nico (1967) | I have only once seen the original pressing with the non-airbrushed 'upside down' man and it was at a London record fair in the 1980s for about £40, which was quite a bit of money. I decided not to get it because the stalk of the banana was missing, just what was I thinking, certainly not USA original - rare - in the UK - very rare - vinyl great condition - very very rare. Didn't learn by my mistake though as about a year later I passed on an original UK pressing of the 3rd LP which is just as hard to find.

albert 12th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Brum Beat Live At The Barrel Organ (1980) | Rare double LP of bands recorded live and includes a very early vocal appearance by Carol Decker. The LP is in a gatefold sleeve and is littered with adverts (which was a way to cover production costs).
Some notes taken from the cover...
"Like most journalists I'm prone to a twinge of exaggeration from time to time but even in my wildest superlatives I couldn't begin to describe the sheer electric excitement with which Carol Decker of The Lazers ripped me apart.....Forget Little Miss Dynamite - this is Little Miss Nuclear Bomb! The Lazers are going to be stars, Carol Decker is going to be the whole bloody solar system - or the business may as well go into liquidation en masse!"
Later one of Carol's dumped bandmates, Julian Ward, did a tell-all expose for the tabloids amusingly headlined "She's a two-faced bullying bitch" (which I still have a copy of) and rather tragically the hilarious write-up only served to enhance her reputation as a wild girl of rock.

albert 11th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumHidemi Saito - Beatles Song Book | Hidemi Saito at the Yamaha Electone Organ.
Apologies for the lousy images, I'm picking up the details from some of my very old ebay listings that I found on backups.
|
albert 11th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Léo Chauliac Orchestra - The Léo Chauliac Orchestra Plays The Best Of The Beatles (1968) | French title is "Les Classiques des Beatles par Les Grand Orchestre Léo Chauliac" and is also on the Concert Hall label.
Apologies for the lousy images, I'm picking up the details from some of my very old ebay listings that I found on backups.

albert 11th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Too Pure (1992) | Added some pictures from an ebay listing I did donkeys years ago, apologies if the images are not so good (old technology). I remember reading that the band members featured on the record all sat together in a warehouse and customised the individual record sleeves, it's not possible to tell which band member made doodles and stuck cuttings on this sleeve but you can imagine the fatigue/boredom seeing the "bewaare" spelling mistake. The Indian Elephant picture is stuck on (looks like it originated from a desk calender 1989), the splashes are sloppy glue marks.

albert 7th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Your Secret's Safe With Us... (1982) | Pulp had a Peel session 18/11/81, prior to which Jarvis had given Mr Peel a copy of a cassette of songs.
Though the front cover has a sticker stating "20 tracks...recorded specifically for this album" I don't think that is technically true, as I'm sure the Vets track is the one on the shared single. I'm looking at my copy right now and have a vague idea that there may have been a promo insert with the LP either lost or is in my brother's copy of the LP which gave more detailed info as to where the tracks actually came from.
The title of the Pulp track isn't listed in the Peel session so I'm assuming that it comes from elsewhere, maybe the cassette or another compilation.
Checking in International Discography of the New Wave I see that there is a Pulp (with female vocalist) that released a single in 1979, I don't know if there is a connection though.

albert 23rd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Damned - Strawberries (1982) | The lyric sheet was seriously smelly when first bought in 1982, now alas faded from my copy.
|
albert 23rd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Stranglers - The Raven (1979) | The inner sleeve of initial copies also had a Gilliamesque caricature of Joh Bjelke-Petersen, notorious (allegedly) Governor of Queensland. The illustration used a map of Australia for his shorts, later copies just had the map of Australia and no caricature, and even later the whole illustration was removed.
Oh, and just remembered that when the LP was released you could buy the regular cover or the 3D colour cover, but the 3D cover cost something like a quid more, they were released simultaneously. Also note that the 3D cover was produced for quite some time because not all of them have the inner sleeve with the withdrawn illustration.
|
albert 23rd Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Stranglers - Black And White (1978) | I have a few copies of the white vinyl freebie in storage, but the last time I looked I found that 2 of them had turned a sort of sludgey brown/grey colour and one remained brilliant white.
I know that they were all originally white so it must be a problem with the vinyl/wax changing over time, and I think finding a pure brilliant white copy is going to become harder as the years go by.
|
albert 17th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rolling Stones - Big Hits [High Tide And Green Grass] (1966) | Wasn't there some controversy over this LP?, I think when it was originally announced it was going to be called "Could You Walk On Water?" with the back cover photo on the front and some different tracks or mixes.
Anyone know the full story?
EDIT: found some info here.
also found the article in Record Collector 169 pages 33-36, it is a rather complicated story starting with the LP that eventually became Aftermath.

albert 17th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBlondie - Parallel Lines (1978) | Nice.
need to check the date.
|
albert 15th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBauhaus - Mask (1981) | original copies of the UK LP had one large band photo instead of the montage and blue lettering instead of white on the inside of the gatefold.
|
albert 15th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBauhaus - Burning From The Inside (1983) | The LP sleeve is a difficult one and memory may be playing tricks on me (I saw this in the Newcastle HMV megastore and nowhere else).
Anyway, if you can visualise a regular LP cover with a printed inner sleeve and then imagine that because of some technical error they jumbled up the printing order and then also made it into a gatefold sleeve with a hole cut out on the front so you could see what should have been the proper front through the hole. That's what it was like. I think. Well the copies were sealed though somebody slit one open to see inside ;)
I didn't buy the LP at the time but years later I decided I would like a copy of this weird original and tracked one down on ebay (listed as 'withdrawn sleeve'). When it arrived, so did the confusion, the one I got was not a gatefold sleeve and although it had the front with a hole cut-out and the rear with the cartoon side of the regular inner sleeve, the inner sleeve I was supplied with was actually just like the normal inner sleeve - so I'm missing the tree picture and band montage. I was considering sending the item back to the seller but decided not too, after all I didn't have any evidence to prove my case.
Does anybody want to confirm what originally happened with this release? It would be useful if you can remember from the time and not just lookup info on Discogs.

albert 15th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out (1982) | yes, the bonus LP is just the Press The Eject.... live LP.
I suppose it was done with the intension of pushing the LP into the charts, the better tracks mostly came out on singles so it was probably looking like a difficult sale.
[also to the annoyance of Bauhaus collectors, the stand alone release of the live LP originally came with a free single 'Satori in Paris']

albert 13th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBuzzcocks - Another Music In A Different Kitchen (1978) | I own an early pressing which is missing "I Need", apparently a mastering mistake, the cover does list all of the tracks.
|
albert 13th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBuzzcocks - The Buzzcocks: The Peel Sessions Album (1989) | Knowing that the band get irritated over the addition of "The" to Buzzcocks, then the front cover probably annoyed them somewhat.
|
albert 13th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBuzzcocks - Live At The Roxy Club (1989) | I read that there are about 30 full shows recorded for different bands playing at The Roxy, the tapes exist but very few have actually been released (just the bigger bands The Adverts, X-Ray Spex, Sham 69, UK Subs, The Boys).
|
albert 13th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumBuzzcocks - Singles Going Steady (1981) | Microgroove LP which is on thin pressed vinyl.
|
albert 22nd Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe 13th Floor Elevators - Thirteenth Floor Elevators (1966) | The master tapes are lost, so you will not hear better sounding than the original pressing of the LP. Here is a ripped mint copy, it has had some processing but is a joy to listen to, much better than any CD I've heard. Note that they sequenced the tracks to match the original text, and there are bonus tracks added after the LP tracks, listen with headphones for best results:
and if you shelled out £££ for the 'Sign Of The Three Eyed Men" boxset and found the Contact Sessions CD totally unlistenable then be extra disappointed by this excellent quality version by the same people:

Why can't reissue CD producers get it right?

albert 22nd Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - The Beatles [The White Album] (1968) | Info overload on The White Album Project website.
|
albert 22nd Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThirteenth Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere (1967) | Listen with headphones, side 2 particularly is a revelation.
One day I will try to rip the soundclip from youtube.
There are demos and singles after the LP playback, which I'd forgotten about.
|
albert 22nd Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThirteenth Floor Elevators - Easter Everywhere (1967) | I love this LP, the proper master tapes are lost so there is no chance of getting better sound quality than the original LP. And that includes all those remastered CDs that always promise the best sounding yet.
Well here is the best sounding yet, at least what we hear without spending $$$$ for an original copy of the LP, (this is recorded off a mint copy of the vinyl LP and has a bit of processing).
[YouTube Video]
question is why can't the reissue companies do this?

albert 28th Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumMarc Bolan - 20th Century Boy (1981) | Agree this is a superb compilation. When I came across it in Rhythm Records London (sadly gone) I could hardly get the wallet out quick enough, such was my excitement.
|
albert 23rd Jul 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumDead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables (1980) | The back cover of Dead Kennedys debut LP proved problematic when the 'other' band discovered that their picture had been used without permission. The original shows the 'other' band complete with their heads but with the DK logo on the drum, the back colour has yellow dots. A compromise was the decapitation as per Bodston's scan but I have seen back covers using a completely different image.

albert 7th Apr 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - Revelations: A Musical Anthology For Glastonbury Fayre (1972) | It would be nice to know what the whole package originally was. My copy has a printed plastic cover (not in great shape) and the sleeve is a fold-open card poster if I remember correctly.
I have heard there were inserts such as a pyramid, flyers etc. Please enlighten me, thanks.

albert 5th Apr 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumButthole Surfers - Rembrandt Pussyhorse (1986) | I believe Redpunk's cover image is of the first UK/Euro pressing with the band name along the bottom of the sleeve.
