The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced (1967)
I used to have a copy with rough to touch paper labels. I thought it was Orlake, but it dawned on me that it was like CBS on the old Oriole presses and that is what it was.

Focus - Moving Waves (1971)
I have hitherto not noticed the USA on the Polydor label. Is the 'stereo' under the Polydor embossed or has it a bit of white to give it a bit of a 3d effect?

Focus - Moving Waves (1971)
I think to be on the safe side the set of labels put up by Hawkmarty with manufactured rather than 'marketed' should be removed as I have only seen the 'manufactured' on Polydor sleeves as well as the publishing information has changed from original issue. These labels should have their own separate listing with the Polydor sleeve so making 3 UK variants.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin (1969)
Led Zeppelin was released in Jan 1969 in the USA. The sleeve was printed offset litho with I assume all 4 plates CMYK so we get the red/orange lettering. The UK sleeve was printed by MacNeil press and Led Zeppelin was released in March 1969 in the UK. I can only assume that the printers mistakenly used the Cyan and Black ( K ) plate only - which as soon as it was spotted the presses where set up with magenta and yellow plates to make good the intention of the sleeve designer or Jimmy Page. The fact that the US issue is correct and has always been suggests to me that the 'Turquoise' lettering is simply a mistake of the Cyan plate standing alone with K as discrete colours. I have not seen this mentioned in any of the vast literature about Led Zeppelin, so perhaps someone can remark on this theory which I'm endebted to albert for nudging me the hint over on 45cat website. It would be cool if a printer can test the soundness of the theory.

I think this exists as Pink Label too

Bread, Love And Dreams - The Strange Tale Of Captain Shannon And The Hunchback From Gigha (1970)
I seem to have encounterd the Mono version more than the Stereo. I think Human Beast is later - 5051? that LP has the peep hole die cut at the back, but I have only seen Stereo copies. Decca has the capacity to surprise. I just checked - it is LK / SKL 5053 so theoretically Mono releases may have been planned.

Syd Barrett - The Madcap Laughs (1970)
there are copies of this sleeve in which the printer mixed up the inner cover from the 2LP Barrett release of the mid 1970's

Pink Floyd - A Collection Of Great Dance Songs (1981)
I reckon other territories used card inners sans rounded corners or uncropped So could be a mix up. But I say that we need to see the whole sleeve as a perspective view to gain a sense of shape.

Pink Floyd - A Collection Of Great Dance Songs (1981)
I don't think a gatefold exists. All I see is the inner card sleeve shown back and front and stitched together. It would be great if a photo of it being opened be provided.

I did see in 1982 a copy of madcap laughs with the inside of the gatefold from the Harvest Heritage 2 LPof Syd. That was a mistake by the printer

Professor Longhair - Live On The Queen Mary (1986)
This was previously released on SHSP Harvest in 1978. Nice to know that the McCartney couple had a soft spot for Prof.

I had the huge shop display - and I have no idea where it went. That still puzzles me. I did not see a gatefold sleeve.

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin [IV] (1971)
documenting Polydor plum labels is a significant task for ALL 4 LZ albums. Take the font used for LED ZEPPELIN on the label without stickers. This defines the period of late 1971, but also the already in print LZ 1 also used this larger more square font probably from this period - so watch out for sellers trying to claim such a copy of LZ 1 as 'original' an undocumented nightmare which has not seen the same work the Beatles collectors have done.

The Temperance Seven - 1961 (1961)
Yes. These are the best pressings from EMI. All thanks to Joseph Lockwood and George Martin who turned EMI around. Seeing a label like this I embrace my inner chimpanzee in pursuit of shiny objects

The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
Thanks for the information. As an aside am I correct in this Parlophone LP was the last of the coveted black and gold label before EMI introduced the matt black paper and yellow ink label design?

The label difference answer is here at a glance. Labels reset because publishing on side one had changed except for Hocus Pocus.

Why were Lennon McCartney songs publishing changed from Dick James to Northern Songs whilst Please Please Me remained the same Dick James Music?

Johnny Winter - Guitar Slinger (1984)
Interesting information. So Alligator have been asked and they have refused. Is it possible that they can be sued and have no case to answer? If so how much will it cost to file a case.

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
I did not kno that!

I have a funny story, at Wintertons auction in Lich some wag had removed the inner sleeve and swapped it with Harry Secombe LP. This was done to put off any potential bidding dealer or collector, so I swapped it back especially as I was not going to bid. Mint fresh ones are highly prized as these often go missing even on nice copies

Don Van Vliet And The Magic Band - Rough, Raw And Amazing (2015)
Is this a bootleg? I seem to recall that the previous release raised a few eyebrows, I wonder if the sound is as awful as the title seems to suggest otherwise

The Kinks - Sunny Afternoon (1967)
Thanks for jogging my memories. Here is an interesting discovery leading on from looking at the strange but interesting Godfrey Townsend website. The psychedelic AC Cobra of Tara Browne who I remember reading about first in the Amanda Lear book on Salvador Dali

The Pink Floyd - The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (1967)
Interesting information 78rpm. Beatles and Pink Floyd were pressed as Parlophone and Columbia in India which can be seen as singles on 45cat. Japan I notice in Odeon. Japan fascinates me. It is or was the 2nd largest market for discs historically yet it must rank low on foreign language comprehension as they have issued as Japanese pressings from all over the world and are very knowledgable in collecting original pressings from country of origin.

King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King (1969)
Is there any research done about the difference in the matrix and what it all means, Has Fripp said anything about the production aspect of this LP? The A1/B1 price hike has been with us for a few years now. The observation about the beginning of 21st Schizoid man as a banded track is something I was not aware of. I do know that the reason why there were sub sections of songs was a naive belief by Fripp or his managers that they could get more royalties from publishing.

Spooky Tooth With Pierre Henry - Ceremony (1969)
I'm not at all sure why this LP is regularly derided. I think it a superb sonic experience and quite un like anything before or since. I think it has 'gravitas' and is a really heavy LP. It captures the feeling of 1969 into 1970 perfectly.

The Beatles - Please Please Me (1963)
I have noticed a difference between Stereo and Mono. The cat no for Gold Stereo is PCS 3042. It looks like EMI set up a new sequence starting with PCS 3000 which if true indicates that there are only about 42 releases of this most desirable of all labels. I have never noticed this before.

James Burton - James Burton (1971)
When the BBC made a radio series about great guitar players in the early 1980's - a genre which has been done to death in recent years - they decided to include Mr Burton. The BBC published an excellent book which is a transcript of the radio interviews and showed this LP signed for the interviewer - I think it was John Tobler. He proudly printed the photo of this album saying that he was kind of forced to make it as he was uncomfortable otherrthan being a session man and Elvis's band member
