Marc Bolan - 20th Century Boy (1981)
M.Antony, you asked "was this the first ever official release of "Midsummer Night's Scene?" To my knowledge and recollection I believe the answer is yes. The liner notes here say that Marc left John's Children because he had "intense dissatisfaction" with the mix of the track. Whether that had anything to do with its withdrawal I don't know. What I do know though is that the inclusion of this track on this album made this compilation sort after worldwide.
It was put together by Australian rock historian Glenn A. Baker who made some excellent compilations for the major labels and on his own Raven label (1979). He specialized in including super rare tracks like "Midsummer Night's Scene" or re-releasing long out of print sort after albums.

Lord Sutch And Heavy Friends - Hands Of Jack The Ripper (1971)
1972 seems to be the most likely year of release. The 45 "Gotta Keep A-Rocking" from this album came out in 1972. Here's a link to the 45 entry on our own site. I would go for 1972.

The Doors - Absolutely Live (1970)
Hi VJ, I got your PM and have added the missing side 2 label. It just needs to be shuffled into place and the second side one image can be deleted or hidden. I did this entry a computer or two ago but have managed to keep copies of all my entries and more importantly my images. So, no bother to track this one down and it was already done but I mistakenly put the side one image on twice when doing the original entry. Cheers, for spotting the error VJ.

Mod edit - Images sorted.

Strange that Prince Buster's other own labels Soulsville Center and Islam also released this with the same Blue Beat cat # in 1964. Should we club them all together?

The Beatles - The Lost Studio Tapes (2020)
sheepdip1234, I agree about having bootlegs attributed to a country. Many famous bootleg labels are well known as being from a particular country. Most of us will know the two most famous and related labels Trade Mark Of Quality and The Amazing Kornyphone Rebirth Label are from the USA. It is a shame this information is lost when we classify items as bootlegs.

The Velvet Underground - Loaded (1970)
Seems my copy is a bit of an odd one with the word stereo in black lettering. They apparently go for big bucks but I'm quite surprised as I would have bought it in the mid to late 70's new in Australia. Must have been old stock or imported from somewhere that had a lot of old stock. I bought it from a punk import shop where there were no pipes, papers, hippies or incense to be found - just discarded fits in a sink in the corner and the owner nodding off on the counter. Kinda cool in a different way DeweyGill.

Led Zeppelin - No Restrictions '69 (2012)
We seem to be getting lost here in our own interpretation of the word bootleg and getting very pedantic about types of illegal releases or unauthorised releases when the term bootleg actually does apply to them all. The Wikipedia defines "bootleg" as "A bootleg recording is an audio or video recording of a performance not officially released by the artist or under other legal authority." Note here that it does not have to be a live in concert recording the term also applies to studio work not sanctioned by the artist.
Some of us seem to think the term only applies to crowd sourced recordings of artists in concert. That though has never really been the case as bootlegs can be studio recordings that have or have not been previously released as this Rolling Stones record proves. Leonard you do raise an interesting point about out of copyright work though which is a very dubious area indeed. For instance a lot of the Charly label catalogue would not have been sanctioned for release by the artist but are technically legal due to being out of copyright. That is where I would draw the line though, if someone releases something that is out of copyright on a legitimate label then it would be an official release.
The point I'm trying to make is that the source of a recording does not make it a bootleg it is the illegal, unofficial or unauthorised release of of the work that determines a bootleg.
This album comes from the BBC Rock Hour live broadcasts and is not an official Led Zeppelin release and therefore a bootleg. The Cult Legends label specialises in these kind of releases but also to confuse things do releases legitimate recordings of Dutch artists. So not everything on the label is a bootleg release but a lot of their releases are. Clear as mud??

And therefore a bootleg by our guidelines JPGR&B. We do not have a category for unauthorised releases or unofficial releases so here they fall under the category of a bootleg. Just like all the purple chick Beatles releases. What's the difference? None.

Thanks to Droid for adding the original labels and gatefold pics. I picked up my copy in the late 70's so no surprise it wasn't the original gatefold sleeve issue but the scaled back single sleeve cover. Still gets a spin every now and then at my joint so it must be good.

Bob Dylan - Fallen Angels (2016)
Don't start me talking, Fokeman. These days it seems to be all about packaging. I have old light, wafer thin, bendy vinyl from the 70's oil crisis days that play better than new 180gr virgin vinyl remastered from the original tapes....you know the story. I put it down to the actual pressing plants and the quality control or lack of in new pressing plants. However, there's not much choice in terms of where record companies can have their albums pressed and you end with the situation you have found yourself in.
I, too, have bought new albums that have pops, scuffs, scratches and are warped straight out of the shrink-wrap. In the USA a few years back they had to recall nearly all of the Beatles' "Let It Be" and use EU pressings instead as a result of the flow of faulty product back to Amazon. It seems the last thing anyone cares about is the quality of the vinyl these days. Packaging is everything and coloured vinyl may look nice...as I said don't start me talking.

Ray Anthony - The Young Man WIth The Horn (1952)
The label on display here would have been issued between 1954-56. The original 1953 issue label can be seen here. A rough history of Capitol labels can be found here. So no need for conjecture GimmeVinyl you are 100% right.

Various Artists - Pebbles Volume 3 (1979)
Hello ppint, the hallmarks of a bootleg are over this, there is no publishing, licensing or copyright information on any of the individual tracks. The addresses given are all artificial but funny "Dacron, Ohio" and "Kookaburra, Australia" they're designed to entertain as well as disguise the origin of the product. Why?
Well, it's because the entire "Pebbles" series are primarily sourced from needle drops this is why the liner notes mention that "many if not all the records included" were run through an equalisation and noise reduction process. I have three of the series and know that pops, crackles and even minor skips are apparent on some tracks. In that sense these releases have lot in common with this https://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/vj1092&rc=107014#107014 release by the Beatles which is listed as a bootleg on this site in that they are unofficial re-releases of official recordings. The other site lists the label as unofficial and these records were primarily made for collectors of 60's garage music. Many of the titles sourced on these compilations had been long out of print or minor regional hits so the market for these LPs was specialist collectors of the genre.
It is also worth noting that in the late 70s when this series appeared that U.S. authorities were having a crackdown on bootleggers. I'm guessing BFD used the Australian address as a red herring to throw investigators of the scent in case these records were confiscated by authorities.
So, where do they come from? Answer, California the global epicentre of bootlegging around that time. Who was responsible? Answer, Greg Shaw the owner of the legitimate Bomp! label. Shaw was always about making under appreciated artists work available and this series was a way of doing that and as the liner notes show he obviously had a sense of humour too.
So, in answer to your question none of BFD's releases are legitimate. The label should be listed as a bootleg label and consigned to no fixed address like the other big Californian bootleg labels of the time The Amazing Kornyfone Record Label and Trade Mark of Quality.

Various Artists - Pebbles Volume 3 (1979)
The BFD label is a bootleg label that unofficially released the entire Pebbles series. There is no doubt that all of these releases are illegal. The address for the label is given as "Kookaburra, Australia 2157" on the back cover but this place of course does not exist. Should we change the country to Australia based on this? I don't know but site protocols are to list details as presented on the product.
So, this gives us a few problems and decisions to make. Should we list these as bootlegs because they are and if not should we change to the country to Australia given that the whole series uses an Australian address although it's fake and most likely used to hide the real origin of this series?

Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band - Wangaratta Wahine (1982)
Hi Phil, after a bit of snooping about I have found out that Image was owned by Avenue and that Avenue came into being with the express purpose of promoting Jimmy and the Boys in 1979. They later released back catalogue Image albums such as this and contemporary Colleen Hewitt, Max Merritt and Tina Arena albums as well as Mondo Rock's monstrosities. So as far as this one goes I'm happy to change the date to 1982 as the cat#s indicate in your comment. Correction sent.

Tropical Fuck Storm - Deep States (2021)
I could have listed this as Australian because it's available here or international because it's available everywhere. I've gone with the USA though because Joyful Noise are an independent label much as we anglophiles would consider Ace, Demon, Charly and the like. So on the basis of that I've treated this label the same way even though I know this was intended for international distribution.

Graham Parker And The Rumour - High Times (1979)
Thanks Bodston and PhilMH. You must have good eyes Phil as can't read any of the fine print you refer to and was going to actually find the record to check it over. Now I don't have to, yehoo! The other thing here, and what initially raised my suspicions, is that there are no matrix numbers on the label which is customary on Australian LP releases.
The Australian and NZ issues have identical track lists but the Japanese and Canadian issues are different. I linked the the Japanese issue below although it has one track that is different "Discovering Japan" replaces "Passion Is No Ordinary Word" The Canadian Issue on Mercury is wildly different and has six tracks that are different and came out the following year in 1980. So, I think we should leave the Canadian issue as a stand alone release when or if it arrives on the site.

This could be a New Zealand pressing but a lot albums that were manufactured in New Zealand during the consolidation of manufacturing processes (closing down of record plants) that occurred across both Australia and New Zealand at this time. The label here looks decidedly Kiwi to me. What do others think?

ZZ Top - Eliminator (1983)
The cover however, reveals that it is an EU pressing. Further digging would confirm this as this cat# and bar code combination was widely used across Europe and Scandinavia. In Greece and Spain for some reason it was released without the bar code but with the same cat#. This should be listed here as the details are the same. Looking at that page it also looks like all of this has been said before.

I always knew this was a double of sorts. So while this is the album it always came in a gatefold sleeve with an additional 12" 45 containing Tender Kinder Baby and Run Run Run (cat# L42002). I once owned it so I looked it up and sure enough here it is.

David Bowie - David Bowie (1980)
On the other site this is listed as an EU release from 1981 so while publishing rights may have been attained in 1980 it may not have been released till 1981. The value of this is by Australian standards slightly less than a new LP release at $A 42 with new LPs usually priced at around the $A 50 mark. There are of course other sellers that want more than $A 100 but that's always the case these days.
The original UK 1967 UK releases (see links below) do however go into the stratosphere price wise with the mono version going for about $A 1000 and the stereo version, slightly higher at $A 1,300.
Most of the songs though appear on https://www.45worlds.com/vinyl/album/tab17 compilation LP which can be had for five quid. So if you want the music it's cheap as chips but if you want the prestige you'll pay through the nose.
By the way you can still get the 2018 double album (stereo and mono mixes) for around the same price as this one. Prices are always a "how long is a piece of string" argument.

The Rolling Stones - Honk (2019)
All versions of this one (even the 4LP coloured vinyl version) were released in Australia. There are clues that this international all over the product and the fact that it is released by Universal Music International B.V. should by now be enough for EU contributors and MODS alike to know what the score is with these products. This one also exposes the old school rights situation in all its glory. There are three versions of these releases and no prizes for working out that they are the USA, Japan and EU plus the rest of the world.
So ultimately there should be three entries for each of these products, USA, Japan and International. Recently Universal International Music B.V. has managed to also include the USA in the rest of the world category on many releases. The Beatles and related artists catalogues owned by Calderstone productions being a good example.
