stoutfellow51 27th Jan 2020 | | Vinyl AlbumSimon And Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water (1970) | Fifty years old this month and timeless. Just picked up a very good 1970 original for only £3, bargain.
stoutfellow51 14th Aug 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (2012) | Well spotted Lee, Baby You're A Rich Man is definitely a Lennon & McCartney composition.
The original 1967 US Capitol release has the correct composers credit, as does the 1976 UK Parlophone version.
In the early 70's the Apple label was used for USA reissues of the album but it's good to see the iconic Capitol 1960's label being reinstated for this release.
stoutfellow51 14th Aug 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour (1976) | This album with 11 tracks was based on the Magical Mystery Tour USA release and had not been issued in the UK prior to 1976.
In 1967 the UK version of MMT consisted of two 7" EP's in a picture sleeve featuring only the six songs from the film soundtrack.
In the US however they opted for an 11 track album from the outset in 1967 with a different sleeve to the UK EP release. The US album had all six movie tracks on side one with five non-movie songs that had been released as singles at various times in 1967 on side two.
Prior to 1976 UK-based Beatles fans who wanted the album version of MMT were able to get it as an import.

stoutfellow51 20th Mar 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumBob Dylan - Blonde On Blonde (1966) | The release date given in Wikipedia is June 20 1966 but the article does not clarify whether that date was worldwide or just in the USA.
It made it's first appearance in the UK album charts on 20 August 1966 so an early August UK release date seems to be the most likely scenario.
stoutfellow51 20th Jan 2019 | | Vinyl AlbumCliff Richard - Cliff's Hit Album (1963) | The Drifters and The Shadows are in fact the same group,(Hank, Bruce etc.) had to change their name along the way so as to avoid confusion with the American vocal group The Drifters.
stoutfellow51 26th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles For Sale (1964) | Bloody hell Getalife, yes it does.
A typo. error that most people, including me, would never have noticed.
There is something about the packaging and overall handling, playing etc. of an LP which makes it just that bit more satisfying than a CD. The advantage of course with the CD as opposed to vinyl is in its unblemished and scratch-free sound.
stoutfellow51 26th Nov 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - Beatles For Sale (1964) | Contrary to what a lot of Beatles fans and critics might say this is one of my favourites, certainly in the Beatlemania era prior to Revolver.
The one obligatory Ringo song (Honey Don't) is a lot better than I Wanna Be Your Man for instance and the likes of Eight Days A Week and I'm A Loser were both at one time contenders for single release.
Decades after having a pristine brand new release way back in 1964 I have just managed to track down a very good copy of the exact same Mono first issue today for the princely sum of £13 - nostalgia knows no bounds, even in the digital age.

stoutfellow51 4th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beach Boys - The Best Of The Beach Boys (1966) | One of the best compilation albums that one is ever likely to come across, on a par with any Greatest Hits LP's from The Beatles, Elvis etc.
No filler tracks at all and a worthy addition to any record collection.
stoutfellow51 1st Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Roustabout (1964) | Only 11 tracks with a total running time of just 20 minutes. It only featured in the album charts for 4 weeks and came out so late in the year that it missed out on the lucrative 1964 Christmas market.
None of the songs on the album were considered strong enough for single release so RCA came up with the 1957 seasonal offering of Blue Christmas instead.
stoutfellow51 8th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Loving You (1957) | Added E/T tax code labels- 1959/60 release.
stoutfellow51 13th Feb 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - California Holiday (1966) | A1 to B3 are from the movie, tracks B4 B5 B6 are all bonus tracks.
stoutfellow51 13th Feb 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966) | Ten tracks with a total running time of 22 minutes didn't seem like good value for a full price LP.
Drums of The Islands & This Is My Heaven are both passable but the rest are pretty much staid movie product.
stoutfellow51 31st Jan 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beach Boys - The Best Of The Beach Boys (1966) | The black label with the rainbow rim by Quad5point1 is from the second issue. Later versions came in a variety of designs ranging from yellow, purple, black etc.
stoutfellow51 28th Jan 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCliff Richard With The Shadows - Wonderful Life (1964) | This release is unusual in having the track listing and movie stills etc. printed on the inside record liner/sleeve.
This might have become commonplace in the 70's and 80's but it was still a rarity in the 60's.
stoutfellow51 21st Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis' Christmas Album (1970) | Not to be confused with the original 1957 RCA release of Elvis' Christmas Album- different track listings for a start.
stoutfellow51 16th Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - It Happened At The World's Fair (1963) | A pretty awful soundtrack album which unfortunately set the tone for several others in the next few years.
Only ten tracks totaling just 20 minutes running time and most of them sub-standard songs badly arranged and recorded.
In hindsight it might have been better to have just pulled off the best four tracks from the movie for an EP and not bothered with the LP at all.
stoutfellow51 8th Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - A Date With Elvis (1959) | In fairness to Memphis Martin I think he was stating that it was Elvis' HMV back catalogue that was deleted in the UK, not the actual recordings themselves. That's my reading of it anyway.
'
Apparently RCA Victor in the States weren't happy with the lack of promotion given to Elvis material by HMV in Britain and did a deal with Decca for them to manufacture and distribute Elvis recordings here on the RCA label under license instead.
The deal allowed Decca to release all of Elvis' current and past material on it's RCA label including recordings that had previously been released in the UK by HMV (EMI). Examples of this include Hound Dog & All Shook Up. Elvis records issued in the UK on the original HMV label are always sought after by collectors and can be quite valuable.
stoutfellow51 8th Dec 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley With The Jordanaires - Pot Luck (1962) | This was the last Elvis UK album to carry the large silver spot RCA logo, from now on all Elvis UK LP's would be on RCA Victor.
stoutfellow51 15th Nov 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - With The Beatles (1963) | Just realised that this was originally released on the same day that JFK was assassinated.
stoutfellow51 9th Nov 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Shadows - The Shadows' Greatest Hits (1963) | One of the best popular music albums ever released.
stoutfellow51 15th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis' Golden Records (1958) | @memphis martin
Thanks for the info.
Both South Pacific and The Sound of Music were released on the Red Seal label in the UK and as you say it was most unusual for the label to be used for a non-soundtrack or classical release.
One wonders whether the original gatefold sleeve release attracted a premium price tag when it came out.
stoutfellow51 14th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis' Golden Records (1958) | I have asked admin. to consider changing the label from RCA Victor Red Seal to RCA Red Seal in line with the 1958 release. Also uploaded 1958 "RCA" rear sleeve.
stoutfellow51 6th Oct 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley With The Jordanaires - His Hand In Mine (1961) | My copy has the flipback rear sleeve with "May 1961 Saltcoats" written on the back. As the album was only released that exact same month then presumably the first pressings all came in a flipback sleeve and subsequent releases came in the laminated sleeve. It has the large RCA silver spot label with E/T tax code.
A really great album, done with conviction and with care.
stoutfellow51 5th Sep 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite (1973) | Does anyone know if the Quadrophonic mix of this album was ever released in the UK, or was that version only available in the USA.
stoutfellow51 12th Aug 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis Is Back! (1960) | Very few homes in the UK had a stereo system back in 1960 so demand for this stereo version would have been quite low. An original stereo album on the 1960's RCA black label is likely to be quite a rarity, it was only in the early 1970's that stereo pop records became the norm in the UK. Even then a lot of people who still had older mono record players would have had problems in trying to play stereo records on them.
stoutfellow51 4th Mar 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Speedway (1968) | The introduction of the RCA Orange label also brought to an end the pressing of RCA Victor records in the UK by Decca.
From now on RCA Victor products bore the notation "Manufactured by RCA Limited,England"
RCA set up its own pressing plant in Washington,Co.Durham which is presumably where most of the work was carried out.
stoutfellow51 22nd Feb 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Fun In Acapulco (1977) | For MM's benefit I've up-loaded the correct front and rear sleeves for the 1977 RCA Victor release of PL 42357.
The 1981 RCA International release for this album now has it's own listing.
stoutfellow51 22nd Feb 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - The Complete Silver Beatles (1982) | Well if the three Lennon-McCartney songs haven't been included then it can hardly be termed as "The Complete Silver Beatles". Should have been issued under "The Incomplete Silver Beatles Rip-Off"
stoutfellow51 21st Feb 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Elvis Is Back! (1984) | The first UK release on INTS 5141 Green label was in late 1981.
The NL 89013 release as shown here was on the black label in stereo and distributed across Europe (including the UK ) from 1984. Country of manufacture is Germany.
stoutfellow51 13th Feb 2017 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Flaming Star & Summer Kisses (1965) | I had no idea that the album had been re-issued in 1969 Memphis Martin. Wherever did you come across that copy, I always thought it had disappeared without trace in 1965.
