Neil Forbes 14th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumHank C. Burnette - The Original Oneman-Rockabilly-Band | I think perhaps those record labels depicted on the cover of this album may, in all likelihood, be well-designed fakes.

Neil Forbes 12th Jun 2015 | | TVThe Beverly Hillbillies (1962 - 1971) | " the actress who played Granny, was actually the youngest in real life" Huh? Bloody hell! The make-up department must've done a marvellous job to make her look as old as she did! By the way, the ACTOR was Irene Ryan(I use the same word regardless of gender, adding a "feminine suffix to a word like actor demeans and devalues the work done by female actors).

Neil Forbes 12th Jun 2015 | | TVRandall And Hopkirk (Deceased) (1969 - 1970) | A friend of mine has this series(all 26 episodes) on a DVD boxed-set. I must borrow it again from him, so I can enjoy yje show again(remember watching this way back in 1969 in what was my last full year of high school - aah, memories...no, no! DON'T YOU DARE START SINGING THAT SONG!!!(ha-ha)

Neil Forbes 12th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumRonnie Hawkins - Rockin' | I think the transition from PYE to PRT happened a few years earlier than 1980. The circumstances were that after close to two decades, PYE Electrical wanted out of the recording industry so they pulled their trademark and the licence thereof from the record company who had used it since 1959. Not wanting to revert to using the "Nixa" name again, the record company rebranded itself as Precision Records & Tapes, or PRT for short.
Neil Forbes 7th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Ring Of Fire | I thought, perhaps CBS might've bought the rights to those tracks I mentioned from Sun Records in the early 1960s prior to the issue of this LP, so they'd have secured the rights for a future(later in the 1960s) compilation or compilations.
Neil Forbes 7th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumShirley Bassey - The Very Best Of Shirley Bassey | What I was talking about, Phil, was the labels of the two "flagship" brands and of the third, Parlophone. The "flagship" brands were, of course, HMV and Columbia. So, you live in Australia now, I figure you've probably brought some records with you from England, have a look at the EMI black-labelled HMV, Columbia and Parlophone records, singles and EPs or LPs of whatever design and you'll see what I mean. At the start of the copyright warning which runs around the label clockwise(or around the top), on HMV the words "The Gramophone Co, Ltd.", on Columbia the words "Columbia Graphophone Ltd." and on Parlophone the words "The Parlophone Co. Ltd.". These are seen mainly on mid-60s vintage issues but, I think, about 1969 or so the individual company names were replaced by "EMI Records Ltd." then, that rectangular EMI logo began to appear at the bottom of the three main labels but not on Stateside or Tamla/Motown. In the mid-sixties these labels had "Made In Gt. Britain" around the top edge and "EMI Records Ltd." around the bottom edge, both in slightly bolder print than that of the copyright warning. I have several examples of British HMV, Columbia, Parlophone, Stateside and Tamla/Motown 45s so I have something, from which to draw on for descriptions.

Neil Forbes 6th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumStatus Quo - From The Makers Of.... | Keep your money in your pocket, Sid! Status Quo have committed the ultimate obscenity, not once but twice! They took their "Down, Down" and "Whatever You Want" songs and corrupted them in rewriting as jingles for an Australian supermarket chain, Coles!
Neil Forbes 6th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumShirley Bassey - The Very Best Of Shirley Bassey | Phil, technically speaking, EMI was EMI since 1938 but the two halves of it had effectively kept their own identity within the amalgamation, Columbia Graphophone Ltd.(yes, Graphophone, not Gramophone, as some often called it), and The Gramophone Co. Ltd. And not forgetting The Parlophone Co. Ltd. Look at some of your 60s-vintage 45s(assuming you're in England), around the edge of the labels of the HMV, Columbia and Parlophone labels, you won't see EMI anywhere on them. But the EMI logo started appearing on those three labels from 1971. I have a British issue of "Softly Whispering I Love You"/"When Susie Takes The Plane" by The Congregation from 1971 that has the EMI trademark(logo) at the bottom of the label.

Neil Forbes 6th Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Ring Of Fire | Yes, Bill, they could well have! Likely candidates would be "Ballad Of A Teenage Queen" and "Come In Stranger".
Neil Forbes 6th Jun 2015 | | TVNot The Nine O'Clock News (1979 - 1982) | Saw this on NBN here in Newcastle, Australia - totally ruined by that utter MORON, Rowan Atkinson!
Neil Forbes 6th Jun 2015 | | TVBread (1986 - 1991) | Agree wholeheartedly, Monolith! This turned up on Aussie ABC-TV some years ago(before Digital TV broadcasting) and it was "stale" even back then!
Neil Forbes 3rd Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumJohnny Cash - Ring Of Fire | I'd have made this a 5-tracks-per-side album by deleting Track 6 on each side - Keep it Secular!
Neil Forbes 3rd Jun 2015 | | TVBewitched (1964 - 1972) | Erin Murphy's 51st birthday approaches(17th June) Happy birthday in advance, Erin! Though a colour pic of her standing in front of a TV in that IMDB bio website would have to date from 1966 or 1967 as it shows her as a 2- or 3-year-old toddler. Holding the cursor showed it as from 1964, the year of her birth. Glad to see Erin has continued acting, though.

Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Of Young America | Okay, yes, there was that London(German) issue of Shop Around by The Miracles but a lot of early Motown tracks found their way to Britain(and Europe) via Fontana and Oriole(and Oriole's Euro agent), then EMI-Stateside from 1962 to 1965, so my knowledge has to a degree failed me but the Decca(and Teldec) link with Motown was brief.
Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Flash Back Greats Of The Sixties | Aussie version: K-Tel NA-445 issued about the same time as the British version, 1973. I'm not sure if I posted this myself, Record Collector may remember me doing so. Here are the Aussie contents: Side A - 1) You Keep Me Hangin' On Vanilla Fudge; 2) Move Baby Move Johnny O'Keefe; 3) You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' Righteous Brothers; 4) Runaway Del Shannon; 5) Friday On My Mind Easybeats; 6) Boom Boom Baby Crash Craddock; 7) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Gene Pitney; 8) Shakin' All Over Normie Rowe; 9) Mr. Tambourine Man Byrds; 10) Land Of 1,000 Dances Wilson Pickett -/- Side B - 1) Gimme Some Lovin' Spencer Davis Group; 2) White Room Cream; 3) Bottle Of Wine Fireballs; 4) Wipe Out Surfaris; 5) All Along The Watchtower Jimi Hendrix Experience; 6) Young Girl The Union Gap; 7) The Rain, The Park And Other Things Cowsills; 8) Pretty Woman Roy Orbison; 9) Yes Sir, That's My Baby Col Joye; 10) The Son Of Hickory Holler's Tramp O.C. Smith.
The cover designs differ markedly, as well as the contents, in fact none of the tracks are a match in either compilation though the artists or groups match in some cases. A quick look revealed one - B6 is the same for both albums though the Brit. issue does credit Gary Puckett while the Aussie LP only refers to The Union Gap on Young Girl.

Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Of Young America | So one more closet Motown artist "comes out"! At the time this was issued, EMI still had the rights to Motown(for Britain, at least) and much of Europe, though in Australia, a company called Astor bought the rights and the purchase sent them headlong into the bankruptcy "wall". The Motown rights thereafter moved from company to company like a volleyball in flight during a game. To my knowledge, Teldec never handled Motown.

Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | TVThe Amazing Spider-Man (1978 - 1979) | Did this guy have his own "website"?(ha-ha)
Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | TVBewitched (1964 - 1972) | Thanks for that, 23skidoo! I wasn't sure of the dates but I knew the cast would've been long dead by now, except of course for Erin Murphy. One question though, did Erin Murphy pursue an acting career when she grew up? She was, after all, only a toddler(3-4 years old) in Bewitched.
Neil Forbes 2nd Jun 2015 | | TVBewitched (1964 - 1972) | To my recollection, I think none of the cast are still living(except of course Erin Murphy, who would now be in her early or mid- 50s). Paul Lynd had his own sit-com programme around 1970-71 but I think he passed away in the mid 1970s. Dick York had a type of dementia when he finally died. I doubt Dick Sargent would still be alive but if he is, he'd be pushing 90s by now.

Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Country Greats | Biff, in that case, I don't think we'll bother about Record Store Day! But what has started up here in Australia is the occasional "Car Boot Sale". I've heard of them being held in the Newcastle area but, as yet I've not attended one.
Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Most Collection (Volume 1) | Volume Two of this compilation surfaced in Australia through EMI's Axis label either late 1971 or early 1972. Disappointed it(Vol.2) had no composer credits on the label.

Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumGilbert O'Sullivan - Himself | I have British issues of this and two other Gilbert O'Sullivan LPs. Haven't done anything with them yet. May eventually transfer them to CD.
Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | TVThe Lone Ranger (1949 - 1957) | It's also said of George Reeves who played Clark Kent/Superman in the "Adventures Of Superman" that he couldn't separate his character role from reality. I think he even tried to fly and came a-gutser*(*Aussie slang for "had a nasty accident").
Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | TVThe Invisible Man (1975 - 1976) | Did anyone see what I'd written about The Invisible Man in comments about The Man From UNCLE? The poor guy's romantic life would be terrible! A potential girlfriend takes him home and her mother "sees right through him"!(ha-ha)
Neil Forbes 29th May 2015 | | TVAfterMASH (1983 - 1985) | This series did get some airing on Australian stations(but I'm not entirely sure both series were screened here), I remember seeing it through Station NBN-Newcastle. I enjoyed it, but yes, I would've like to have seen Alan Alda, Mike Farrell, Loretta Swit oreven G.W. Bayley to appear in recurring guest spots, perhaps they should've brought Gary Burghoff in as a permanent cast member as Radar O'Reilly, that may have given the show at least 5 seasons.
Neil Forbes 28th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - 20 Country Greats | "Record Store Day"? What's that about? We've never seen such an event as this here in Aussieland!(you like that bit, Aussieland?)
Neil Forbes 28th May 2015 | | Vinyl AlbumVarious Artists - The Sound Of Young America | PhilMH, you ol' devil, you! You sprung one on me! I didn't know Dorsey Burnette had appeared on a Motown-owned label.... WOW! And yes, you would expect Teldec to issue this one under the London banner as, at one time or other, these tracks had turned up on 45s issued in Britain, Germany, or even Australia under the London trademark, however Jimmy Jones is the odd one out, having appeared on the M-G-M label, he was on that label here in Australia in any case. Conway Twitty was also on M-G-M, I should add. And Sam Cooke was on RCA by the time he recorded Wonderful World though his earlier stuff was on London.

Neil Forbes 28th May 2015 | | TV60 Minutes [US] (1968 - Now) | As I explained to you in a PM, 23skidoo, this was my only inlet to comment on the Australian version. And incidentally it was meant as a comment but by misadventure with the mouse(gotta stop feedin' it the wrong type of cheese - ha-ha), my comment went into the review section instead. I don't know yet if anyone has posted an IMDB image from the Australian version. If and when someone does put up an IMDB from the Australian version, feel free to transfer my remarks to it!

Neil Forbes 27th May 2015 | | TV60 Minutes [US] (1968 - Now) | ReviewHere in Australia, this(the Australian version) has come to represent the nadir of TV journalism! All that's trashy and tabloid-style, as if it came directly out of Murdoch's gutter-press! I used to watch it years ago(1977 when it first started on Station TCN-Sydney, and through Station NBN-Newcastle) but it quickly degenerated and now sits in the gutter with the rest of the scum.
