nboldock's comment: "think the smiley thing is a work in progress, we [the Mods] don't know the details yet..." Not to worry, thanks anyway! By the way, still waiting for Zabadak to come back with his bit about the covers. Are you there, Zabadak?, and R.C., I noted the number, single digit, 8(eight, or ate, as in devoured - swallowed whole[gulp!.... burp!]).

Funny you should mention "Love's Theme", R.C.! I bought a Reader's Digest set last time I was in Newcastle, had that track contained at Tr.6/Side1/Record 4. The album set: "Easy Listening Sounds Of The Seventies. Sorry, I'm not submitting this one - waaaayyyy too much work involved!(I'm thinking of my poor ol' typing fingers here! Ouch!)

R.C.: "Took this for a spin today not a very smooth ride I tell you". Hey R.C., did you get dizzy? I bet Tommy Roe would've!(ha-ha).

Jr. Walker - Sax Appeal
I took all the composer credit info from the back cover. Not exactly sure when Jr. Walker(real name: Autry DeWalt) parted company with his "All-Stars", someone may have that info, if so, please add it in comments. So I'm not sure if there are any of his solo albums prior to or after this one. Pick of the tracks: Track A2 is one of his best and he does a really good instrumental version of Until You Come Back To Me, the old 1967-68 Stevie Wonder song. I wonder if there are any other copies of this one floating around.

R.C., I recall several of the tracks from this LP issued as singles during 1969. I actually have El Condor Pasa c/w Why Don't You Write Me on an American CBS-Columbia single, in stereo, no less! and a copy of the title track paired with Keep The Customer Satisfied in a picture-sleeve(somewhat flimsy and falling apart - the sleeve, that is) which is only in mono! Also on American CBS-Columbia, I hasten to add. Perhaps they issued the singles as "teasers" for the LP and held the LP back until 1970. I had a regular Aussie issue of Celia c/w The Only Living Boy In New York - was that one in stereo in the USA? And MrGobby, If you hold the two copies of your albums up to your eyes, do you get a stereo-optical view?

R.C., I don't think I was debating, I was simply saying that when K-Tel USA wanted to include an Australian track in one of their issues for the US market, there were far better, and far worthier tracks that could've been used than that from Janet Mead. But then I'm an atheist so something like that from Mead taking up valuable LP space that could've been put to far better use(like using the Johnny O'Keefe/Margaret McLaren version of Mockingbird, for instance), really rankles me!

R.C.'s comment: "Neil you only have to look at K-Tel's Australian compilation albums would that answer your question". I'm sorry R.C. but you're missing the point I'm trying to make. I'm NOT talking about Australian K-Tel issues here. I'm talking about the calibre of songs that would be worthy of appearing in a US compilation so the American buyers of these K-Tel albums can hear the great stuff coming from "down-under"! But Janet Mead's piece of religious shite isn't fit to be seen or heard ANYWHERE! Festival could've supplied K-Tel USA with any number of tracks of far superior quality and calibre to include on their compilations. As I said, I cringe when I think of what the Americans are hearing when their turntable stylus reaches track 6 on this LP's Side B. A great alternative would've been Johnny O'Keefe and Margaret McLaren's version of Mockingbird, far and away better than that of James Taylor and Carly Simon!

Zabadak said: "Unusual to find covers on Beatles compilation albums due to copyright issues..." :erk: I'm curious! How do you mean "covers"? Are you talking about sleeve artwork?

RPFiller, I note you said the tracks were all original, that's good to know, because K-Tel had, in latter years started "cheating", using re-recordings, or recordings of dubious source which they tried to claim as original artist versions but, when you heard them..... you knew something wasn't right about them, the singer's voice didn't sound quite right(was that really [insert name] on that track?). One of the very worst offenders in that regard is the New Zealand-based Music World label, owned by Hughes Leisure Corp. If you're chasing authentic product on vinyl or CD, give Music World the flick, they're absolute rubbish!

Elvis Presley - Elvis Presley
The circular "Button" RCA logo should have, by rights, been the only trademark RCA could use in its home market alongside the Victor logo, which was simply the word in a fancy font. The "Nipper" trademark(dog and gramophone) was the property of The Gramophone Company of England, who leased the trademark to the Victor Talking Machine Co., of Camden, New Jersey. When some reps from RCA(then not much more than a division of General Electric) came sniffing around the Victor plant in 1929, they wanted the plant to make radios. Gramophones and records were the last thing they were interested in. The people at The Gramophone Co. in England should've stepped in at that point and told RCA: "You can buy the plant and the Victor name, we don't own them, but we DO own the Nipper trademark and it reverts to us!" Several years later, the rightful user of the Nipper(HMV) brand should be Capitol Industries as the US SUBSIDIARY of EMI. I stress Subsidiary because it is a lesser status than that of a division, which the Australian, New Zealand and European branches of EMI are.

Sorry, R.C., that's not the point of what I was saying. I was asking why couldn't K-Tel USA have chosen something far worthier from Australia to put in their American compilation than that piece of crap from Janet Mead(I cringe when I think that rubbish is representing Australia on this US compilation when there are songs a thousand times better that could've been used).

What a shame you didn't put the cover up for us to see. Would've been interesting to compare it to Vol.1(though it wasn't actually called Vol.1). And before anyone asks, sorry, I don't have this so I can't upload it myself.

Of all the Australian stuff they could've used for this album, why the F*** did they use that piece of religious crap from Janet Mead? They could've used a Kevin Johnson track, Rock & Roll(I Gave You The Best Years Of My Life), a far worthier inclusion - and the ORIGINAL version!

This was certainly a good compilation, the only down-side was that, though a stereo mix of "Baby You're A Rich Man" is available(and stored in EMI's cavernous vaults!), it wasn't used for this LP, though the stereo mix of "All You Need Is love" is included here.

This is effectively a different album to "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies" though some of the tracks(not all) are common to both albums. I suspect this MIGHT, and I stress MIGHT, be an Australia-only compilation, though I could be wrong. But I stick by what I said about the LP I uploaded earlier, "A Collection Of Beatles Oldies" being a 1966 vintage first-issue copy.

Geez, Phil, they sure were a miserly penny-pinching bunch in those US record companies, or, on the other side of the coin, ASCAP, BMI and SESAC were a tad greedy in charging royalties on behalf of the music publishers they represented. Should've followed our model, ay?

The Aussie version was a 20-tracker. The Yanks got short-changed, big-time!!! We Aussies got the far better deal, the only thing this version has in common with the Aussie issue is the cover design - that's it!

Actually, Phil, it was The Eagles' "Take It Easy" which appeared in Australia on an EMI-issued Asylum single in 1972(the record itself is copyrighted to 1971 but delayed to '72 for Australia. It dudded - never charted). The label for the issue looked like it had a Capitol affiliation. The affiliation didn't last too long though. Within a year, Warner in Australia had assumed distribution, though EMI in Britain may still have had the label for longer.

R.C. said: "The legend of Xanadu sounds so close to the original". That was the intention, to sound as close to the original version as possible, though they were not entirely successful in their efforts.

The reason Asylum was with EMI(in Australia as well) in the early 1970s was because of an initial tie between Asylum and Capitol Industries(EMI's US subsidiary). That's my guess, for what it's worth anyway, Phil.

With the obvious exception of Love Me Do(and that's the only exception unless PS I Love You is also in the set, which it isn't), then it surprises me that EMI has used Mono mixes of so many tracks on LP 1/Side 1 and that last cut on LP 2/Side 4 when the stereo versions clearly exist and have been used in other compilations.

In regard to R.C.'s last post, perhaps the record stores were trying to clear their stocks of cassette versions of albums. Probably weren't overly concerned whether the recipient even had a cassette player or not.

Thanks for that info Phil, but I think I bought the LP out of an Axis rack at a small electrical and mixed business shop in Stockton(suburb of Newcastle and my old stomping ground "many moons ago") but bought it sometime around 1973, which make it a year old by the time I got it. And to R.C., re the Popcorn LP, yes it did sound distorted, on both cassette and LP.

It was possibly the only LP that carried both German-language versions of I Wanna Hold Your Hand(Komm, Gib' Mir Deine Hand, which translates back to English as Come Give Me Your Hand) and She Loves You(Sie Liebt Dich, which translates back exactly the same). Also here are the four cuts from the British Long Tall Sally EP but not in the order as they appear on the EP.

Funny you mentioned that one, R.C.! I once bought it on cassette but the sound quality was way to edgy and harsh. Some years later I was given an LP of the album and that same harsh, edgy audio quality was there too! I had bought the follow-up LP called Ticker Tape which had some original tracks among the cover versions. I'll upload it sometime soon.

I think some record shops broke some sets up and started selling the Rarities LP as an individual item, in spite of the "not-for-sale" warning. This may have forced EMI to issue the record as a compilation in its own right to get around that situation. But hey, I'm only guessing!
