The Decemberists - The Hazards Of Love (2009)
Should this CD should be made Australian as this is the only copy on the site. An entry from the time when everything was meant to international and no-one knew why. For the record this was released in Canada and Argentina with the same details according to the untrustworthy other site. However, as there is no evidence here this should be listed as an Australian release. I do not have the evidence at hand to prove this international and it seems that no other site users do either. Correction sent.

Björk - Vespertine (2001)
Listed this one when everything was supposedly international but that is not really a good fit here. This has identical cat#s to the EU linked issue on the site but a different barcode. So on the strength of the different barcode could we have this one changed to an Australian release.I listed it 3 years ago and no other matching CDs have appeared so I think this would be better listed as an Australian release. You can refer to the comments on the page for further insight but as it stands this was an Australian made CD for the Australian market and that should be enough to make it an Australian entry. I've sent a correction but if anyone has any better ideas I'm open to suggestions?

The German CB 249932 releases also have a different barcode so separate entries for the two releases are needed.

Cornershop - When I Was Born For The 7th Time (1997)
Linked to Australian copy on the site which is the primary release for this album. Australian issue has same cat# and barcode but is also manufactured and distributed by Shock Records and perhaps that should also appear on the label list alongside Wiija as the label.

Does this and this belong on your list Leonard? As you can see we went through a bit of a process with these two but it is good to know what to look for when these types of things crop up in the future.

Just to confuse things further the same cat# barcode combination was used for this in Australia. Luckily though it was released solely on Karussell and there is no mention of Spectrum Music. These global discount labels are a nightmare with a lot of the Polygram, Spectrum, Karussell, Pickwick stable being released in Australia also with the same details or very close facsimiles. For instance the Spectrum label in Australia mysteriously (or fortunately) added a preceding "0" to the barcode of all their releases. Quite often as is the case with the Australian issue of this CD the label may not quite match and is more often than not just Karussell rather than Spectrum Music / Karussell as is common on the EU (UK?) releases.

So this label is a difficult one with releases that can be UK, EU and Australian all sharing the same details and some minor label differences separating some but not all releases. What's the answer? Who knows but I favour EU for this release.

Joni Mitchell - The Hissing Of Summer Lawns (1987)
Well, let's get down to tin tacks. What was the USA release date for this CD? I don't think you'll find one. What I think you'll find is that for some reason Warner Communications in Europe were attaching the US cat#s as a secondary more as an indicator of the source or master used rather than because it was actually for sale in the US.

What makes me think that? Well, we'll need to look at Leonard's other Joni Mitchell Hejira to untangle this one. Although it was released 3 years later in 1990 Warner Communications Europe were still using the same system to catalogue CDs. That on the inlay looks like EU Cat# above the US Cat# which is above WE 851. So, same system, different album but the 1990 USA issue of Hejira is not the same as the EU issue and carries no EU cat#s at all. So I'm putting forward the view that both Leonard's Joni Mitchell CDs are EU releases and were never released in the USA at all. Unless you actually have some proof that these CDs were released in the US with the EU cat# on them I'd leave them as is.

You can also be fairly certain that one or the other of the EU or USA releases was also released officially in Australia. At the time Warners seemed to favour sending EU product to our shores such as this and this. I didn't list these as international because like you I see it as stripping identity and any meaning from the listing.

However, the purpose of me pointing these things is primarily to get to the facts and not to offend other site users such as yourself. My comments should never be taken personally am I'm sorry that you wish hadn't tried to help me out because I'm glad you did. What I am sorry about is that we both have wasted so much time nit-picking on these international or not issues when essentially we're on the same page. Unfortunately though this part of the site is a train wreck and I can't look away or leave it alone until something is done.

Greg, Phil is right look at your comment here and explain the difference between that and this entry. Oh, there's one slight difference we actually have the Australian release date supplied by Phil. How much evidence do we need? So your position here should be list as EU add released in USA to notes if you were to be consistent.

Phil and I understand the peculiarities of the Australian market and I might say are also among the most meticulous catters on this part of the site. We both flagged that there would be problems due the way our CD market operates and these were generally ignored. Both Phil and I research each CD we enter and actually look for corresponding cat#, label and barcode combinations. We don't wait for other versions to show up that match but now that most people (MODS/site users) are saying that is not the way to go and that made in and released in trumps those details but that is not how it was explained to us when this part of the site opened up or what is in the guidelines.

I personally spent a long time pointing out these problems and offering solutions ages ago which coincidentally seem to match yours and Leonard's current stance. One year ago in the forum I started titled "CD Albums: Time To Bite The Bullet Pt. 1 The Problem" I put forward this idea.

"The guide to choosing a country link would look something like this:

1. Made In Country/Region + Marketed in the same Country/Region = Listed as from that Country/Region

2. Made In Country/Region + Marketed in a different Country/Region = Listed as from a different Country/Region (ie. EU made UK releases) This would include what MM calls Alpha (early) and Omega (late) releases and hopefully deal with that problem.

If you know your CD was

3. Made In Country/Region + Marketed in multiple Countries/Regions = Listed as from Country/Region of original release (should perhaps be changed to country/region of manufacture) but available in other countries/regions by selecting from an international list of countries contained in a drop down menu on the listing page or added to the notes if that's not possible.

4. If you are still unsure of Country/Region select Unknown Country

If a member selects Unknown Country a Mod could enter it while the entry is being checked if there is enough data entered to determine it. This would hopefully get round the problem of having too many CDs listed from Unknown Country."

Now all of this was put to the Admins on the site and no changes were made but site users and MODS seem to have moved in this direction mainly, I suspect, because it just seems to be an easier and more logical approach. However, these are not the guidelines as yet and those of us that try to follow the current guidelines have ended up frequently being told we're wrong. A lot of my Australian made CDs have been made international by MODS on the strength of matching cat#, label and barcode and a lot my EU made Australian releases have not been made international (in spite of evidence).

From an Australian site users perspective it appears to be a one way street with a lot of our stuff being made international and then on the other hand when we put forward the notion EU and USA CDS are international (even the very same identical CD) the reaction is usually confrontational or complete disbelief. Then all of a sudden a raft of other microscopic details such as secondary cat#s, local publishing and distribution companies seem to be extremely important. None of this is in the guidelines but the hypocrisy of how we currently interpret them is not pleasant and very real from this end of the planet.

Otis Redding - Love Man (1992)
This was released in Australia on 31st August 1992 according to PhilMH (a reliable source!). Same question international or EU release. Whatever the answer it will most likely apply to all EU Rhino / Atlantic releases. This German issue was released in 2001 and the original Cat# barcode, label combination of this CD was made in France and released in 1992. So once again I have three correct choices as to where this is from because technically is the Australian issue, it is most certainly the EU issue and it is also international if we use the evidence that it was released in Australian. Too many choices all technically correct. What to do?

Two site users in Australia have this very same issue. "Australian release on 29th June 1992" according to PhilMH. International??? Hmm... I might do James Brown tomorrow for more of the same shenanigans. I haven't sent corrections because I feel it will be a futile experience involving a lot of needless flack from the northern hemisphere. When the facts and evidence is in we do nothing about it except ignore it. These issues were pointed out two and half years ago on these Otis releases and so far all we've done is look the other way.

The "bang 'em in and they'll sort themselves out" mantra is a total cop out and these Otis CDs are definitive proof of that. Nothing has been sorted out and evidence that doesn't sit well is completely disregarded. Anything other than empty promises on the horizon ADMINS/MODS?

This was also the Australian release and these are my scans. Should we add the fact it was released in Australia to the notes or make this CD international as per site guidelines? Or is the answer still no-one really knows.

Santana - Supernatural (1999)
This is an odd one with the European Cat# being 07822 19080 2 and nearly all of the rest of the world (except Japan and South Africa) using 07822-19080-2 and the same barcode. For some reason though Israel has used the EU Cat# 07822 19080 2 so does that make issues with both Cat#s international? Israel is shaping up to be a problem as it seems common practice for distributors there to import CDs from the EU and release them with a "distributed by ......" tag but they are the very same CD and they don't change any of the details. Spain, an EU country, for some reason uses the Cat# 07822-19080-2 that puts their release in with the rest of the world category.

So the question is do we make two separate international entries on the grounds the of the hyphenated or otherwise Cat# or just go by country/region of release. I know it seems ludicrous but the list of releases and images here back up my assessment. I think we may need to make Israeli releases special cases as we do for Italy otherwise a lot of EU releases will have to be made international as they are in fact the very same identical CDs. The endless conundrum continues...and evidence just seems to compound the problems rather than point to the way forward.

Actually there are 19 tracks on both the CD and packaging gs999999. I forgot to put the 19th track "Listen To The Music (MOTIVE 7" Edit)" on when I entered the CD. I've added it on so the listing should be correct now. Looks like I copied and pasted the linked Philippines issue tracklist that omits the song entirely and forgot to check the CD at hand. It makes me wonder why the "Listen To The Music (MOTIVE 7" Edit)" is not included on the Filipino release. Anyone know why?

Well Greg, I certainly agree with your statement "no two people really seeing eye-to-eye" when it comes to entering CDs. The vagaries of the site are so great here that I don't even see eye to eye with myself sometimes. As things stand you can technically change the country to international and then back to the country without a problem. Don't laugh, I've done this many times but still don't know which way is up. Which I guess puts me in the same boat as everyone else.

As for "Hopefully, the powers that be have something in the pipeline". I don't share your confidence here because we've (quite a few of us) been banging on about this for four years now and we're still nowhere in this regard. My fear is that these problems will eventually make this part of the site such a mess it will be very difficult to use for any practicable purpose. On the bright side though if that's where we want to go we're well on the way.

Oh, to whoever the MOD is that has the thankless task of trying to sort this one out you have my sympathies.

Well, Leonard and Greg while you both know I agree that CDs should be entered as from the market/country of release unfortunately that is NOT site policy. If it were, it would make things a lot easier to enter items in this part of the site.

So, following the guidelines as I have done here by adding the two CDs with the same label, cat# and barcode is not the correct way to go. Does anyone on the site know what is what and how to go about entering CDs in this part of the site. As it stands, everybody is just doing there own thing and there is no logical (or even illogical) process to follow.

If what you are both saying now is the correct way to go I'll have to go back and correct a couple of hundred CDs that I originally entered as Australian then the MODS in their wisdom changed those to international and now I have to go back and request corrections to change them back to how I originally entered them as Australian. This proposition is not that attractive to me at all and is in my view a waste of time because the lack of effective guidelines gives me no confidence that whatever I do will be right.

Added Canadian issue with same barcode, label and cat# is this international enough yet? Does anybody check this stuff when it goes in? The current procedure of bang em' in and they'll sort themselves out is not adequate and the number of duplicate entries and incorrect listings on this part of the site are testimony to that.

Righto! that's enough of CD Albums world for a few days but every time I accidentally stray in here there are always problems. Sometimes I wish I didn't like checking in to see if I have anything in the Top 50 because every time I do I spot mistakes. Oh well, that's the way it is.

The Australian release has the same cat# but different barcode. Phew! not so lucky with Israel, Canada and Mexico though same cat# and barcode. The Mexican issue I still have doubts about as the other site does have a habit of copying details from other issues without verification sometimes and there are no images to back up the barcode given on this particular entry.

However, I've uploaded a scan of the Israeli label which is basically the UK label with "Manufactured in Israel by A.B.C.D. Ltd ...distributed by Helicon Records." somehow added to the label. The booklet for the Israeli issue is the printed in Holland version that accompanies many of the EU releases. International or what??

Memphis Slim - 4.00 Blues (1993)
All of these Tring International and Double Play CDS would have been released in Australia. Released may not be the right word as these products were more available than released in a traditional sense and I'm not sure if they would appear in traditional catalogues or appear in charts of the time. I used to (maybe still do) have some of these CDs and the other site lists this company (both labels are from the same company) as a European budget label. I don't think we can apply the independent (a la Rough Trade, Ace, Domino, Creation) tag to these products. The parent company has international in its name and that should be enough of a clue as to the intended markets for these budget products. These CDs generally surfaced in in what you might term High Street clearance warehouses in Australia and not generally in music shops. Sanity and JB Hi Fi (Australian music chain stores) did stock some but in the main they were warehouse fodder and sold for about $5 Australian. That's about nothing in Euro or US money!

However, this does raise questions about how we should list these labels because they certainly aren't what I'd call an independent label and the company would be probably better described as low budget global warehouse marketeers. What to do with these types of labels and the current slew of bootleg radio broadcast labels from all over the world is a bit of a conundrum for CD Albums world. Not that we're short of those.

"From The Valt: No Security, San Jose '99" well, a couple of typos here "Valt" should be "Vault" and the coma after "Security" should be a full stop. This entry from the other site lists this one slightly different also so more scans and a little revision wouldn't go astray on this entry. This was also most likely released in Australia just to confuse things further.
