albert 14th Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumTindersticks - Nénette Et Boni : Musique Originale Du Film (1996) | If you bought this LP from certain shops they also gave you an unfolded poster on thin card. A bit of a pain to take home and keep.
|
albert 11th Oct 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rolling Stones - Metamorphosis (1975) | The LP is made up from demo sessions and patched-up sources. If you visit Felix Aeppli's website and search the text for "SKL 5212" he has listed which tracks come from which sessions, then somewhere amongst the mountain of info on his website you can find who played what during each session.

albert 29th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request (1967) | According to Record Collector 169 page 36, the LP was originally going to be called "We Love You" and had a minimalist white sleeve with an image of a gift tag, a finished sleeve has survived, but then the idea got shelved and sort-of rehashed for Beggars Banquet.

Shame that other 'Pond' get the name without qualifiers, though not on 45Cat.

albert 10th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - "Yesterday"...And Today (1966) | Here is a link to the Livingston story (rarebeatles.com)
|
albert 10th Sep 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Beatles - "Yesterday"...And Today (1966) | Years ago I saw a picture of someone holding a rejected? promo poster for the original Butcher sleeve, it was won at auction, and it is the only time I'd ever seen it. As far as I can remember the poster had a red meaty ? border and some wild text, ...whatever it had I know it looked great. However I have never been able to find the image (with the border) again, surely it is out there somewhere, even the repro-poster makers haven't bootlegged it, and I'd like one on my wall !

albert 24th Aug 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumJilted John - True Love Stories (2018) | Boss Tuneage released an album of radio sessions, demos, live and rehearsals which might be better than this LP, though I have yet to purchase a copy. I read somewhere that when it came to recording the official LP a band member decided to completely rearrange the tunes & playing styles.
|
albert 26th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Strokes - Is This It (2001) | I thought New York City Cops was pulled from the track listing.
|
albert 26th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Strokes - Is This It (2001) | When I got my album at Rough Trade retail shop they supplied a Strokes poly bag to put it in, though I suspect that they would have given a Strokes poly bag for any purchase around that time - even if it wasn't by The Strokes.

albert 12th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDevo - Live (1980) | Very rare official promo for radio airplay, possibly less than 500 copies.
I think that 6 of the tracks may be the same ones on the "Devo Live" mini LP that came out around the same time.
The later Target DVD/CD "Live 1980" concert is of the day after (17 August 1980 Phoenix Theatre, Petaluma), though that one includes more tracks.
|
albert 12th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDevo - B Stiff (1978) | Strange to see that the Virgin flimsy-wrap flexi was included, though I've never been tempted to buy this compilation.
|
albert 12th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDevo - Duty Now For The Future (1979) | Some pressings have a totally different back cover which is just the song titles in a variety of wacky typefaces, and comes with insert, (also the sleeve had the 2 different colour combinations).
|
albert 12th Jul 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumDevo - Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! (1978) | Gerald (Jerry) Casale did a stint in The Numbers Band as drummer then as a bass player [page 57 "We Are Devo" book], but was kicked out of the band when he put on one of his favourite masks during a gig.
Mark Mothersbaugh once played in a band called Flossy Bobbit.
Alan Myers had played loosely in bands including Tin Huey, and one called Jazz Death [page 114 "We Are Devo" book], and he knew Bob Mothersbaugh.
I had the LP on an orange or orange-red vinyl, but it sounded poor so I replaced it with the later black vinyl pressing.
When Virgin started their budget pressings this LP was given the cat number OVED 1, which spelt backwards seems like too much of a coincidence.

albert 6th Jun 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumTyrannosaurus Rex - Prophets, Seers & Sages, The Angels Of The Ages (1968) | Just how frustrating the task is, of getting Tyrannosaurus Rex on CD. I was in Fopp the other week, just browsing, and I happened to remember that T.R. had been on my wish-list for a very long time and noted that I had read about some relatively recent, (a few years ago), 'deluxe releases' which seemed worthy of investigation. However I also remembered that previous explorations over the years had proved fruitless, - that the reissues were somewhat troubling, - at least enough to prevent a purchase. And so it was yet again, another pass.
OK, I'm not someone who normally buys a CD if I have the music on vinyl, the music would have to be extra special to me, or there has to be an incentive for buying the album again - such as extra tracks. I own all of the Tyrannosaurus Rex LPs, 3 in stereo and 2 in mono, the 'Prophets' LP is the duplicate and the mono version is flat and lifeless in comparison to the stereo version, so naturally I want the stereo CD versions. And I would like some extra tracks please. Well, it seems like the choices on CD are [going on oldest first]: 1) stereo, dubbed off vinyl, no extra tracks. 2) stereo and mono versions together, one or two extra tracks maybe mono only 3) 'bulky' deluxe 2CD package, remastered mono only, Peel sessions and unfinished/alternative takes 4) various dodgy-looking CDs of unknown origin lacking mono/stereo indicators, 5) budget straight reissues and 2-fers also not indicating mono/stereo.
Yes, there is a large selection to choose from but they all seem botched to me. Is there not a CD that has the original stereo LP remastered & includes relevant singles and maybe include any properly finished (but unissued) tracks. Radio sessions etc are usually best kept separate.

albert 6th Jun 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumTyrannosaurus Rex - My People Were Fair And Had Sky In Their Hair... But Now They're Content To Wear Stars On Their Brows (1968) | We certainly have been paying for the same things over and over after Marc's tragic death. However search around for 20th Century Boy - a wonderful triple LP of all the rarities and non-LP songs which was released in Australia in the 1980s and that covers every rarity released in Marc's lifetime. Some of us lucky people managed to get hold of a copy on import.
|
albert 5th Jun 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumThe Kinks - The Kink Kontroversy (1965) | Hmm, I'd say possibly not the original first issue labels. I have the stereo copy of this LP and it has the old style Pye design, logo on the left of the label.
Even though I have the earlier label design I wouldn't like to state that it is a first issue since, being this is The Kinks, the initial pressing run would have been massive to meet the expected demand.
|
albert 30th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumElvis Presley - Rock 'N' Roll (1956) | There are 5 substitutions to tracks on the UK release, 3 were added from his Sun singles which hadn't had a UK release.
There is a CD reissue that gathers most of the tracks - the USA sequencing and a few singles - but it doesn't include the Sun sides on the UK LP.
I did read somewhere that Elvis expressed that he was unhappy with his first LP (American version), in so much as it was a rush release and some tracks he didn't consider 'right' for the LP [he hadn't had much time in the RCA studios and 5 tracks RCA used were actually old unissued Sun recordings].
|
albert 18th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumSyd Barrett - Barrett (1970) | Anyone like to explain the black labels, are they from a later pressing? Text states "Manufactured in the UK by EMI", the text on my green label copy states "Made in Gt. Britain" like An6y66's image.
|
albert 18th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumSyd Barrett - Barrett (2014) | I see that Richard Wright has been dropped as co-producer on this reissue, naughty.
There are a number of differences to the text and logos on the sleeve and label, apparent when comparing original to repro.
|
albert 18th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Strictly Personal (1968) | I should have stated in the notes that this particular issue is stereo, they also did a rare mono pressing.... I know this because I've just found a couple in my stashed pile, I also have a UK stereo pressing that strangely comes in an original Blue Thumb USA sleeve with a Liberty sticker over the Blue Thumb cat number (and its in astonishingly great condition). You will have to wait for the scans though as the scanner has been packed away and I'm too busy now with other things.
|
albert 18th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Safe As Milk (1967) | Apparently the USA true mono version (red Buddah labels) is the very best sounding version and is yet to be reissued, despite the claims on the Sundazed reissue [which was actually a patch job using a variety of sources, some dubbed off vinyl].
|
albert 17th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Safe As Milk (1967) | The mysterious Herb Bermann, and an illuminating interview.
[YouTube Video]
Herb Bermann is also quoted as saying he wrote lyrics but wasn't given credit on the following songs (and probably more):
Trust Us
Safe As Milk
Kandy Korn
Gimme Dat Harp Boy
Owed t'Alex
Triple Combination

albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Trout Mask Replica (1969) | This is the first UK release of Trout Mask Replica.
I typed the song titles from the inner sleeve in a hurry to avoid the time-out, there are a few slight differences to titles on the label as follows:
Hair Pie: Bake I
Moonlight In Vermont
Hair Pie: Bake II
The Blimp (mousetrap replica)

albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And The Magic Band - Lick My Decals Off, Baby (1970) | Composer is marked as Captain Beefheart on Straight releases, not Don Van Vliet.
|
albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And The Magic Band - Clear Spot (1972) | The flap should slide under a strip of PVC (often missing). Note that these PVC sleeves will 'fog' the vinyl record.
|
albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Mirror Man (1971) | you probably have the UK Buddah release, details now on the database.
|
albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Strictly Personal (1971) | I've added the original Liberty release to the database.
|
albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Strictly Personal (1968) | Just to warn people that there are many that have damage to the vinyl (mostly just on one side), looks similar to the leeching effect of PVC. Needless to say the vinyl plays terrible on the damaged side but a lot of these were sold as 'mint/unplayed' when they surfaced in the 1980's (I think it was a warehouse find).
|
albert 16th Mar 2018 | | Vinyl AlbumCaptain Beefheart And His Magic Band - Mirror Man (1971) | The flimsy front cover with it's die-cut shattered mirror, and the fact that you need to open it up to get to the record meant that many of the original covers are torn and battered.
