This album was released in two editions:

MGM E/SE 3942 B5: TEDDY
MGM E/SE 3942 B5: VALENTINO

[See USA LP MGM E/SE 3942 for additional details]

There is no evidence to suggest that either of the above editions feature the subsequent B5 VALENTINO selection from Canada. Subsequent pressings of the stereo edition, assigned the "(D)" suffix also contain TEDDY and not VALENTINO. Somewhat confusing; unclear and a mystery as to which editions were issued in like fashion to the USA counterparts.

A subsequent release [with the revised cover] was also issued in Canada. The album cover is the same as that which appears on USA LP MGM SE 3795 second cover issue. The catalog number on the label and on the album cover (front and back) is the same- MGM SE-3795. However, the spine of the album cover clearly shows the catalog number as MGM SE 3795(D). Unlike conventional pirate releases which are mass produced and seek to pass off counterfeit material as legitimate product, PATRON RECORDS releases were conducted on a small scale and available by private subscription only. Albums have plain white labels and were supplied in white cardboard sleeves. Details of contents were listed on accompanying sheets. "LCR" series catalog numbers were assigned at the outset, with seven-figure numbers, given in parenthesis, added at a later date. Neither set of numbers appear on any of the discs.

MALACO RECORDS

TELSTAR RECORDS PLC release
TELLSTAR label

The above album was issued by Telstar Records plc, a British company specializing in the tele-marketing of compilations by established artists, and distributed by BMG Records Ltd. It contains 20 of the 24 titles recorded for Malaco Records in May 1989 for which British and European rights were licensed to Prism Leisure Corp. plc. All legitimate releases of the Malaco material in Britain and Europe have in turn been sub-licensed by Prism to the companies handling the product, with the exception of that appearing on the company's own label.

All of the song selections on this album are from the 1989 Malaco Recording Sessions.

This was simultaneously released on CD TELSTAR TCD 2393 and MC TELSTAR STAC 2393.

This sub-licensed TV-promoted package was the first release of Malaco recordings in Britain. Prism Leisure subsequently marketed their own compilation CONNIE FRANCIS: 24 GREATEST HITS, but in CD and MC formats only.

Connie Francis - Who's Happy Now?
UNITED ARTISTS RECORDS (UK) LTD
UNITED ARTISTS label

In 1978, Connie Francis signed to record an album for the British arm of United Artists Records. In the nine years since her final LP for MGM, the London-recorded SONGS OF LES REED, her output of new material had consisted of four German tracks issued on two Polydor singles (1970); an independent coupling for the Stateside Ivanhoe Records (1971); another for GSF (1973); a few overdubs to original MGM Records tracks, and a further self-produced coupling (POLYDOR 2066 881 LET'S GO WHERE THE GOOD TIMES GO/BURNING BRIDGES), which was exclusively released in Britain. Although her association with U.A. was brief, and called for one album, with an option on a second; it nevertheless resulted in her most prolific output of the past 25 years at the time. Her 26 April - 28 May 1978 London sessions produced 14 English titles, of which 12 were released on her only British album for the label, WHO'S HAPPY NOW?, but these subsequently spawned German and Spanish LP adaptations, and a number of tracks sung in French, Italian and Japanese. At the time of these recordings, United Artists Records was a division of the Transamerica Corporation, who shortly after sold the label to EMI Records, themselves the subject of a subsequent takeover by the British company Thorn Electric.

The above album was simultaneously issued on cassette UNITED ARTISTS TCK 30182.

This entry showcases the officially released edition. Sleeve depicts the name "Connie Francis" in WHITE flowing letters, and song listing on liner amended and "matched" in liner notes. The amended title, however, again features an error, albeit of a lesser nature. The correct song listing of B5 should read WHAT HAVE I GOT, I GOT YOU BABE.

Connie Francis - The Best Of Connie Francis
Reader's Digest release
Reader's Digest label

The above is a 4-LP boxed collection which, at the time of issue, was only the second multi-album set in the world to be devoted to Connie Francis. Unlike its predecessor, MGM MMX 9955/58 Greatest Hits issued by Polydor in Japan, all LPs in the British compilation are independently housed in picture sleeves inside the box, each with its own overall title. The package has a set catalog number of GBCF-A-106, the "G" denoting its LP format [Gramophone], and "BCF" the Best of Connie Francis, while the albums themselves have their own "RDA" series of consecutive numbers. Sleeve liners, however, display the individual LPs as GBCF-A-1-106 through to GBCF-A-4-106. Each record sleeve has notes pertaining to its contents, as well as a running Connie Francis biography extending to all four. The compilation is made up of selections handled in the UK by Polydor, whose logo appears alongside that of Reader's Digest on the box and all labels and liners.

This prestigious set was simultaneously released in a 3-MC pack on Reader's Digest CBCF-A-106.

The album box front cover pose (also used for “Connie At The Movies”) stems from an April 1978 London photographic session. “Connie's Golden Hits” has a picture similar to that first used on Germany MGM 665105 “Connie's Greatest Hits”; “The Country Side of Connie” features one of many taken at an October 1960 London photo call and “Romantically Connie” uses one from the same session which produced that used on USA LP MGM SE 4637 “The Wedding Cake”.

PICKWICK INTERNATIONAL (GREAT BRITAIN) LTD release
CONTOUR label

The British arm of Pickwick International is one of the most successful in the budget albums field. Most of the company's releases have appeared on its own Pickwick Records or Pickwick StarTrax logos, but the above album label states "Pickwick Presents Contour", in similar fashion to those issued by Musical Rendezvous. There is no change to the Contour logo. Confusing matters somewhat is that MC equivalents also appear on Contour, while CD counterparts bear labels stating Pickwick Compact Discs and Pickwick Music.

The above album was simultaneously issued on CD PICKWICK COMPACT DISCS PWK 113 and MC CONTOUR CN4 2081.

Album liner states compilation licensed from Polydor Inc., who assigned it the international number 829 742-1, further underlining the close ties between that company and Contour. Sleeve picture is widely regarded as the best May 1965 London Mayfair Hotel press photo call shot issued to date.

Only three Connie Francis albums were marketed by Polydor Ltd during the Eighties: POLYDOR 2315 426 I'M ME AGAIN in 1981, and the 1982 reissues POLYDOR 2624 038 GREATEST HITS Volume 1 & 2 and POLYDOR SPELP 62 GREAT COUNTRY HITS. During the period of company name change first to PolyGram Records and then PolyGram Record Operations Ltd, Connie Francis albums were marketed on a variety of labels on a sub-licensing basis. The above release, Polygram's first in 11 years, was compiled by the PolyGram TV division and the subject of a nationwide TV advertising campaign, similar to that of POLYDOR 2391 290 ALL TIME GREATS. Sixteen years after that release, it established itself as a definitive collection of Connie's UK chart successes.

POLYDOR label - POLYDOR TWO FOR ONE Series

The above album was simultaneously issued on cassette POLYDOR 3577 344.

The above was the first Connie Francis release in the 2 FOR THE PRICE OF 1 series. Breaking the tradition of both featured albums - individually numbered 2929 070 and 2929 071 - having been formerly issued by Polydor, the set adopted a "theme" of each LP being devoted to contemporary songwriters, and marked the British debut of USA LP MGM SE CONNIE FRANCIS SINGS BACHARACH AND DAVID and Polydor release of MGM SE 4655 THE SONGS OF LES REED, previously issued at the beginning of the decade by EMI on MGM CS 8117. A further precedent was set with the use of a full-length Connie Francis picture in the gatefold spread instead of a display of other 2-FOR-1 collections. This exception was carried over to the subsequent 2-FOR-1 package outlined prior to this entry. A scan of this gatefold spread has been provided herewith.

This album was the world's first reissue of all 12 selections contained on the similarly titled 1960 USA LP MGM E/SE 3869, marketed in Britain by EMI on MGM C 845/CS 6021. Supplied in a new picture sleeve, its four additional tracks make it the most definitive Jewish compilation possible.

A3: THOSE WERE THE DAYS is a live performance and from the same 1970 Romanian concert which produced Italian selections on USA LAURIE HOUSE LH-8019 CONNIE ITALIANO. Copyright is owned by Connie Francis.

B5: FIDDLER ON THE ROOF/TO LIFE medley culled from USA LP MGM SE 4472 HAPPINESS: CONNIE FRANCIS ON BROADWAY TODAY.

B7: SUNRISE SUNSET is a "live" recording culled from USA LP MGM SE 4411 CONNIE FRANCIS LIVE AT THE SAHARA IN LAS VEGAS.

B8: EXODUS/HAVA NAGILAH medley culled from USA LP MGM SE 4298 CONNIE FRANCIS SINGS THE ALL TIME INTERNATIONAL HITS.

Sleeve pose was subsequently [albeit inverted] used on the first US reissue of Jewish material on LP MGM MGB-1-5412 CONNIE'S GREATEST JEWISH HITS in September 1982, nine months after its stateside "debut" on SESSIONS ARI 1023 MERRY CHRISTMAS...CONNIE FRANCIS.

Connie Francis - 20 All Time Greats
POLYDOR RECORDS LTD release
POLYDOR label - POLYDOR SUPER SERIES

The release outlined above is the eventual TV-promoted package which was two years in the making. Based on the tele-marketing behind USA LP SESSIONS SG-69 "CONNIE", from which it has borrowed its picture sleeve, it was only the second Connie Francis album in the world to receive this treatment. Within weeks of release (August 27 and September 3, 1977) it became the first LP by a female singer to top the UK charts, selling over 1 million pounds worth of copies, and going on to become one of the most widely distributed albums of her career.

This album was simultaneously released on cassette POLYDOR 3177 290 and cartridge POLYDOR 3827 290.

In theory, because of its enormous popularity and success, this release saw four different editions during its release. Notably would be:

EDITION A: features traditional Polydor red/white/black design which includes the circled "ST 33" symbols in white. The sleeve is in gloss finish and with midnight blue background to liner. Scans of this edition have been provided.

EDITION B: features sleeve in matt finish and black background to liner. Released in July 1980.

EDITION C: features a gold block stamp on cover describing it as "LIMITED EDITION SPECIAL PRICE". Between June 1977 and July 1980 the album was selling at the highest retail level. Its release date given to be July 1980. The special price limited edition was for a short period only, offering a minimum 1 pound off the original price. A scan of this cover has been provided. The sleeve, which is of a higher gloss finish to that of EDITION "A" features different printing credits.

EDITION D: features new design red/white/black Polydor label which has a smaller logo and with title and contents set out in completely different fashion. Sleeve has the same new printing credits as on EDITION "C" but is of a matt finish.

This WHITE LABEL TEST PRESSING SECOND COMPILATION is the second proposed TV-promoted album following pressure to make it more representative of Connie's worldwide successes. After considerable delays, the package was eventually trimmed to 20 selections with the emphasis on UK chart entries. A compromise was reached on the inclusion of WHEN THE BOY IN YOUR ARMS IS THE BOY IN YOUR HEART (not featured in this compilation), a major US hit for Connie, but synonymous with its original performer, Cliff Richard, in Britain.

The following selections from this compilation were NOT included in the final product released.

Connie Francis - Connie Francis Hits Collection
POLYDOR RECORDS LTD release [unreleased]
POLYDOR label - POLYDOR SUPER SERIES

This WHITE TEST PRESSING FIRST COMPILATION album was issued on the Polydor label, in the full-price "SUPER" range of releases.

This album was the first to be considered for a British television campaign and prompted by the huge successes scored by many of Connie's contemporaries with similar projects. The objective of this package was to provide a definitive collection of Connie Francis UK chart entries: eventually realized 16 years later in 1993 with POLYDOR 519 131-1 CONNIE FRANCIS THE SINGLES COLLECTION.

In the US, she had recently had a major hit with the tele-marketed 2-LP set CONNIE on SESSIONS SG-69 and pressure was put on Polydor UK to change the track line-up, even to the extent of including material that bore no relevance to the British Connie Francis success story. Seeking a compromise, a new 24-track collection was assembled which, had it materialized, may well have exceeded the vast sales of the eventual compilation 20 ALL TIME GREATS.

No catalog number, as such, was assigned to this test pressing, produced while Connie's material was still being released on the MGM label. It has been entered under POLYDOR 2391 290 since it initiated the compilations which led to the final product.
