The Veil

1958
Does anyone know when in the 1990s this was first broadcast? When I first entered this, I put 1958 based upon its production date, but technically the airdate should be whatever year it was first actually aired as a series.

Thanks for your review Quad5point1, much appreciated. I was so looking forward to the proposed cinema release, got excited with a longer TV series, then got a serious bottom lip with a Disney exclusive (we don't have Disney+). But I eagerly await a DVD! Cheers again.

Review
What an absolute joy it was to sit through 8 - 9 hours of pure genius at work. After watching Episode 1 I was a little worried about what way the documentary was going. It wasn't unlike the original film as there was a lot of angst and heaviness going on and at the end George left the band. At the start of the Episode there was an awful lot of very fast cutting and at times was a little distracting, added to that there were clips of film overdubbed from an audio only source which looked a little weird so between that and all the aforementioned angst I was left feeling a little deflated. Day 2 and I settled down to watch Episode 2 which was so very different to the first one. I started to feel very positive and engaged with film. The boys were really having a great time and the good humour and banter was amazing to watch. It wasn't until they brought Billy Preston into the fold that the whole thing magically started to take shape. I would go as far as to say that if Billy Preston hadn't been brought onboard the album might never have happened, such was the positive influence he had on the other four guys it gave them room to concentrate on doing what they do best, writing some incredible music. This continued througout the whole of Episode 2 and into Episode 3 which for me only had 1 awkward moment when Paul looked as if he wasn't really into doing the rooftop gig but as we already know, the show went on. Barring my hesitancy about Episode 1, Peter Jackson has done us all a huge favour by letting us in on what it was really like to make the album and it wasn't anything like the funereal film that was released first time around. It was full of joy, happiness and humour and has changed my outlook on what it was really like, it was absolutely wonderful to watch. It's a much more positive and uplifting experience than the original film and I'm only sorry it didn't go on for another 8 hours!. Absolutely brilliant and a very highly recommended must see. Just can't wait now for the release of the Blu-Ray and if it's released soon it will be top of my Christmas list.

I checked: "Nickelodeon" is not part of the official title of the series. It's like how BBC productions for a while included the BBC logo on their title screens.

@club80audi1 Wow, two shows, that was lucky. We got chosen at random when lined up in the playground. I don't remember a second chance at our school, I was at Kinson School just down the road from you. The details are pretty scant on this series, not much has survived. Was the July show (ticket above) the first one, do you know?
Update note, July 2023: Peeling Banana image added. Found photo online, can't locate any further details as to photographer, date etc

Have I Got News For You

1990 - Now
I've not watched this for Donkey's. Pretty much a battle of egos between Merton and Hislop every week with naff token guests and occasionally a comedian. The first episode had Peter Cook and Douglas Adams as guests how do you top that? Angus Deayton might rub people the wrong way, but you can't fault his timing easy to see Hislop and Merton getting jealous when he got bigger laughs. You could see the show losing its bite in the early 00s with the constant John Prescott is fat jokes or when a politician came on the show and they sucked up to them.

Must admit I don't miss Angus.. his host persona and delivery seemed to be based on a low key version of Basil Fawlty at his most sarcastic.

@Joyful Jukebox Very odd indeed that the series would be almost lost since it was made by Desilu, the studio that more or less invented the concept of filming live-audience shows for archival and syndication purposes (and they clearly held on to it till 1958 for rebroadcasts). I'm willing to bet it might have been due to an archive fire, which is I believe why only one season of the mid-60s sitcom My Living Doll has survived. Or the episodes were junked for tax or legal reasons (there's precedent for that, including at least one film directed by Charlie Chaplin).

This is old news for those familiar with Supermarionation lore, but for anyone searching the name, the face of lead character Troy Tempest was based upon that of American actor James Garner. I think Atlanta's face was vaguely modelled after her voice actress, Lois Maxwell, too. I think Marina's was based on Brigitte Bardot, but don't quote me on that (except to correct me!).

Paul Sand In Friends & Lovers

1974 - 1975
Another MTM snoozefest, much like the two Newhart "comedies." The humor was extremely dumb, and after about the first 10 or so minutes I wanted to doze off. (How could my folks stand this show? There was also Emergency on NBC in the interim after All in the Family and before Mary Tyler Moore (I don't remember what ABC had on Saturday nights at that time, but I'm sure it would have been far superior to Friends and Lovers). I guess my mom and dad were too lazy to get up and change the channel.)

Since Disney/ABC - which bought out 20th Century Fox in 2018, which in turn bought out MTM Enterprises 20 years before - is now stuck with the dubious honor of owning Friends and Lovers, I can only hope Disney either loses the film elements or - better yet - burns them. Then this exercise in ennui would be lost forever. (20th Century Fox Television is now 20th Television under Disney's aegis.)

I've only seen one episode of this show, the 11th episode to air "Maid in the Snow". That episode was very funny with all the early MTM charm I can't get enough of. The show final nail in the coffin was the program that replaced it, The Jeffersons, ran for 11 years. I hope more from the series is released but for now here's a clip from the 1974 preview show in very poor quality. [YouTube Video]
And here's the opening credits with a very underrated theme song in beautiful quality.

The Mersey Pirate

1979
Review
Saturday morning Granada kids TV programme which ran for one season (although it seemed much longer!) when Tiswas were on their 1979 summer holidays.

Featuring Duggie Brown (Lynne Perrie's brother) Uber-gag-meister Frank Carson and former Cavern Club DJ, professional scouser Billy Butler.

Set aboard a boat on The Mersey, featuring a dockside audience and guests interviewed out on deck, it became the only televison programme, apart from the cricket, to be regularly called off due to inclement weather.

ANNOUNCER: There will be no Mersey Pirate today because it's raining.
KIDS WATCHING AT HOME:Yesss!! ... Brilliant!!!

It was rubbish to be honest, despite the inclusion of Carson. It felt as if the producers and crew were trying to manufacture a Tiswas-like anarchic madness within the staid confines of a format which wasn't that far off from resembling BBC's Multi-Coloured Swap Shop.

Then again almost anything having to stand in for Chris Tarrant and Sally James would have seemed pale at the time.

The format was repeated by Granada the following summer (sans Duggie B and shipping vessel) with the Billy Boyle fronted 'Fun Factory' (verification needed .. especially on the 'fun'.)
This effort not only introduced us to idiot cockney DJ Gary Crowley, but was the first ever television show to feature the artistic talents of a young Jeremy Beadle.

Enough said I think.

This show was very funny. Sadly only two episodes of this series are still known to exist which is quite odd for a series on film and not broadcast live. Here's a clip from the third episode to air “Renting The Attic” (Aired: 10/16/56).

Skippy The Bush Kangaroo

Apparently this show was massively syndicated worldwide during its run. Just for fun I was checking out out what TV show was airing on local TV at the time I was born in 1969 in Saskatoon, Canada (we only had one channel at the time) - and it was this show. But by the time I was old enough to actually watch TV, it had vanished from my neck of the woods.
