George Slv 25th Dec 2020 | | Stars Of The Grand Ole Opry
1955 - 1956 | I only know that the TV series was named the Country Show. Gannaway may have used Stars Of The Grand Ole Opry for theatrical showings and later for video. They might have tried to use it at the start of the TV series. The Grand Ole Opry disputed his use of the name.
I've added an image from the closing of one show on video showing Al Gannaway. Images of him were not easy to find.

Quad5point1 4th Dec 2020 | | All Creatures Great & Small [2020]
2020 - Now | 1 1 "You've Got to Dream" - 1 September 2020
Newly qualified veterinarian James Herriot travels from his home in Glasgow to the Yorkshire village of Darrowby for a job interview at Siegfried Farnon's practice. Siegfried takes James to his first job treating an abscess in a gelding's hoof. James meets Helen Alderson while treating an injured calf and she urges him to stand up to Siegfried, who will respect him. The locals get James drunk on homebrew and he mixes up a pair of cats while trying to feed them, resulting in Siegfried almost castrating the wrong one. James manages to prove himself after saving the lives of a cow and her calf, leading Siegfried to offer him a permanent job as his assistant.
1 2 "Another Farnon?" - 8 September 2020
James collects Siegfried's younger brother Tristan from the station and they accidentally crash Siegfried's car. Tristan announces that he has graduated from Edinburgh veterinary college and joins the practice. James takes him on his rounds, where he has trouble dealing with a cow suffering with milk fever. He fares better with Mrs Pumphrey and her Pekingese dog Tricki Woo, which leads her to invite him to a party, where he meets Helen's partner Hugh Hulton. Mrs Hall later works out that Tristan has not been honest about his graduation.
1 3 "Andante" - 15 September 2020
Siegfried's application for horse racecourse vet is jeopardised after Hugh, the owner of the surefire race winner and the pride of the village Andante, disputes James' rationale for putting it down. Tristan revels in his new job collecting debts from clients, until he ends up frittering it all away in the pub – and uses his insider knowledge to his advantage in betting on the second favourite to win it back. Mrs. Hall tries to help Helen encourage her younger sister to realise that there is more to life than farming.
1 4 "A Tricki Case" - 22 September 2020
Alongside developing his flourishing relationship with Helen, James is enlisted in helping Mrs. Pumphrey's dog Tricki Woo back to a healthy weight; Tristan, however, takes up the responsibility, determined to earn his keep so Siegfried will fund his forthcoming return to studies – not helped by the dog's sneaky indulging in the expensive foodstuffs given to tide him over while away from home. Mrs. Hall is troubled by the continuous lack of correspondence from her son, while the Farnons pass the buck onto each other in examining a rather ferocious canine.
1 5 "All's Fair" - 29 September 2020
On the day of the Darrowby Fair, James agrees to stand as attending vet, judging the livestock and pet competitions, unaware that it is a taxing and unrewarding assignment. Siegfried, Tristan, and Mrs. Hall all place wagers on when James will resign in exasperation. James experiences pressure from nearly every competitor, and from Helen, anxious for a favourable assessment of her prize bull, in hopes of securing a profitable sale. Siegfried meets an attractive and unattached friend of Mrs. Hall, Dorothy, and despite their mutual attraction, Siegfried still mourns for his recently deceased wife
.
1 6 "A Cure for All Ills" - 6 October 2020
James feels guilt over a cow a farmer purchased based on his recommendation, which is now morbidly ill with an abscess, and which he feels powerless to cure. Tristan becomes a zealous advocate for a risky procedure, which Siegfried, as head of the practice, strictly forbids. Tristan manages an overwhelmed surgery as best he can, whilst Siegfried is taken with flu. At James' surprise birthday party, Maggie, the barmaid breaks off her tenuous relationship with Tristan, citing his lack of seriousness. Encouraged by Helen, James flees his birthday party to perform surgery on the morbidly ill cow, assisted by Tristan, which Siegfried reluctantly agrees to after initially attempting to stop it. Later, at the Drover's Arms, Siegfried promotes James to Senior Vet.

2020 - Now | ReviewHaving watched the original series from start to finish and thoroughly enjoyed it, I approached this new remake with some trepidation, knowing that remakes aren't always successful but this is one that bucks that trend. I really needn't have worried though because the casting is superb and the filming is amazing. I was already a big fan of Samuel West who plays Siegfried in this series and he doesn't disappoint. Nicholas Ralph as James Herriot is pretty good as well. I was disappointed that it didn't come out on blu-ray but maybe sometime in the future when they test the market with a DVD release. If you haven't seen it yet then keep an eye open for it, it doesn't disappoint

1976 - 1984 | I've probably watched the "Maudlin's Eleven" and "Vic Arpeggio: Private Investigator" segments over 200 times (each!) and laugh hysterically at them every time as if seeing them the first time. This series was a gift from heaven. Joe Flaherty is one of the most underrated comic geniuses ever. And get a load of the Skip Bittman (Rick Moranis) stand-up comedy warming up "The Danny Thomas Show", brilliantly inept!

1979 - 1986 | I've also been found guilty of watching this programme.. as it was shown on the UHF channel 20 WXON Detroit. The title then was Prisoner: Cell Block H in the US. It's been decades since I've seen it. The character names I do remember.. but little else. I do remember an old geezer TV repair man coming in to fix the telly, and remarked it was missing a valve.. and one of the gals made an escape, and "borrowed" some bloke's EH Holden ute that lived nearby..

2017 - Now | @carryonsidney To each their own. I consider it the worst, though so far as I write this Season 3 has been a marked improvement. EDIT: Well, until the last few episodes when everything fell apart and some aspects of the S3 finale suggest the writers got the USS Discovery confused with the TARDIS from Doctor Who. It's that level of sloppiness that turns a lot of people off.

alexlincs 23rd Oct 2020 | | The Office
2001 - 2003 | Rated 7/10Hailed as a classic and one of the best sitcoms of all time by both critics and viewers alike. This series made stars of everyone involved. The character David Brent has appeared on many best comedy character lists. Brent is an egotistic narcissist, but unlike Alan Partridge he is maybe a bit more ignorant and sympathetic, Partridge is more of a Machiavellian monster than a loveable idiot; both are victims of their own arrogance though.
The Office was one of the early "Cringe Comedies" along with I'm Alan Partridge, Peep Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm in the USA and followed by series like The Inbetweeners and maybe Nathan Barley and Friday Night Dinner to an extent.
So, the question is: "is this a classic and is David Brent a great character?" The answer is yes to both. This is nowhere near the masterpiece it is made out to be. I measure how good a TV series is by whether I would watch it again in its entirety and I've had no desire to revisit it since I saw it upon its first broadcast. For me there's just something a bit naff and dated about the "mockumentary" format a bit like sitcoms with canned laughter. The cynic in me says the BBC elevated this well above its status to fill a comedy void, bear in mind at the time the BBC had very little in the way of new comedy, with most shows being long running ones like Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the lasts series of I'm Alan Partridge.

alexlincs 23rd Oct 2020 | | The Weakest Link
2000 - Now | Rated 6/10Anne Robinson was a good choice of presenter. She previously presented Points of View in a cynical way. Calling her the "queen of mean" is generous hyperbole. It's clearly an act and she can be seen breaking character by smiling or even laughing in a few instances.
The game is a basic quizshow with a banking mechanic and a voting system. Contestants would often vote off who they saw as the most competition. These two mechanics I've not seen implimented before on a quiz show. I know shows like Catchphrase had a banking mechanic, but it was automatic and didn't rely on the contestants saying bank and they would often forget or say pass by mistake. The cash prizes were often pretty small, I think £10, 000 was the maximum and most players took home around £4,000 or less. The game was a bit cheap as the questions got harder and more obscure as the game went on, not too mention more long-winded to run the clock down.
Overall, this was a cold and cynical gameshow with a metallic set to match; see also Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, Shafted and Golden Balls. Anne Robinson was a hit with viewers and the show ran for a massive 12 years and had a US spin-off with Anne also presenting. There was also a spin-off game for PS1, PS2 and Windows which I wouldn't recommend as it's dull and for trivia fans Anne Robinson was sampled in a cheesy hard house record by the usually excellent Pants & Corset (Paul King).

alexlincs 2nd Oct 2020 | | Harry Hill's TV Burp
2001 - 2012 | Rated 7/10I was pretty fond of this at the time. I think a large part of the humour depended on your knowledge of UK Soaps, especially ITV ones. Like a lot of Harry Hill's stuff this was (largely) family friendly, slightly surreal and very silly. The TV series had a large team of talented writers including Stand-up comedians John Moloney and Chris Addison and David Quantick (who provided additional material for Brass Eye, On The Hour, Spitting Image). I think largely what killed it off was the tight deadlines (if I remember rightly this was broadcast weekly) and the fact the writers would need to sift through hours of TV to find a 20 second funny clip. For something like Emmerdale you are looking at 2 hours worth footage a week, now imagine that across multiple channels, then there's issues of licensing the clips, getting special guests etc. Frankly it must have been the equivalent of pointing your house to work on. All that said I got some big laughs out of most episodes and thought it was good twist on the overused clips show format.
For anyone curious the compilation TV Burp Gold DVDs are a good place to start and very cheap often costing less than £1 each. But be warned some it is a bit dated given they are referencing TV and pop culture from nearly 10 years ago.

Quad5point1 27th Aug 2020 | | Lost Home Movies Of Nazi Germany
2019 | ReviewRecently discovered home movie footage from 1936 offers a unique and powerful insight into what people in Germany were thinking and experiencing. In these pre-war days, Germany was on a high and the Hitler Youth seemed like fun and games, but Nazi control was soon to become an all-pervading force, militarising the nation. The rise of anti-Semitism is explicit and grotesque, shocking even though we now have the knowledge of what happens next.
The film follows an infantry division during the invasion of France, fighting their way to Dunkirk, and reveals a new perspective on what the evacuation meant for the average German soldier. On the Eastern Front, a far darker and more visceral journey across the endless Russian steppe and the almost unimaginable horrors unleashed during Operation Barbarossa is captured by a soldier.
As well as amateur movie footage, the film charts the progress of the war through the diaries of ordinary Germans, some dizzy with excitement at what Hitler had achieved, others horrified by the effect it was having on their friends and families.
Christmas in Germany 1941 is an unsettling time. Food is scarce, the weather is freezing and news from the front line in Russia is causing Germans to realise the war is a very long way from over. The stage is set for the second half of the conflict.
Through the home movies and diaries of ordinary Germans, this film charts Hitler’s dreams crumbling and the moral reckoning the German people must now face. It reveals the stories of people battling to save their families from deportation to the death camps, while others endure the horrors of ever more deadly bombing raids, all set against a backdrop of propaganda and false hope pouring forth from Nazi high command.
In Russia we meet a German doctor who throws himself into the firing line at every opportunity, not to win glory but to save his wife and three young children from deportation to the death camps in the east, while in Dresden a Jewish diary writer struggles to deal with ever-mounting restrictions and deportations.
We also meet some of those forced to live under German rule, including extraordinary footage of a group of Jews living in hiding just a mile from Anne Frank, and a family in Normandy enjoying a bucolic summer before they find themselves on the front line when the Allies take on the German troops on the Atlantic Wall.
The film then moves to the endgame of the war, the choices faced as the net tightened and the crazy efforts to fight to the bitter end even as all hope is gone.
