Scooby Doo Where Are You!

1969 - 1978
The music during the second season (with the Bubblegum-sounding chase scenes) is the coolest out of the entire show's history. However, the band are different than the one which backed Marks in 1969.

The session players in 1970 were: George "Austin Roberts" Robertson (vocals); Danny Janssen (writer/acoustic guitar/synthesizer); Bobby Hart (keyboards/backing vocals); Jerry Scheff (bass); Bob Crowder (drums...whom, also appeared in the animated Hardy Boys as the first television Black cartoon character; in the then-concurrent series Scooby Doo wound up winning the ratings war against!); and Sue Steward (writer/backing vocals). A LOT of the same personnel worked on Hanna-Barbera's "JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS" series, too, and assembled a novelty album for Capitol Records in 1970.

Proper Sci-Fi!!!

I have one rule of thumb that determines for me if something is genuine sci-fi, or just a fantastic light show fantasy piece:

Do I come away from this with more questions that I went in with?

(Anyone who claims to have the answers hasn't asked enough questions yet :)

And this really lived up to billing, as it deals with some fairly predictable, and well worn fare of many worlds / multi-verse / fate / destiny / free will themes, but ingeniously, uses that predictability from established formulas to lead you well and truly up many garden paths, only to bamboozle you by playing with your expectations of what is about to happen, and the general meaning of what it's all about... then throwing a neat twist in just at the punch line / expected outcome.

What is Devs?

Well it's safe to say there is pretty much a Fight club rule on this one...

..."you do not talk about..."

You get the picture, and that is both one of the points of the show, and what makes it difficult to fully explain without spoiling it.

But it most certainly is centred around the themes I mentioned earlier.

A cool, glacial slab of minimalist sci-fi with a great story, lots of drama and moments of action, opaque, but reveals itself in the end...

(Not like some TV shows, that only think they're being profound, but ultimately go nowhere... often because the writer(s) haven't actually thought it through, and got a destination in mind from the outset... Lost, you might say :)

... and shows that it actually has warmth and soul to it's ideas (and humour!)

A great self contained (or not, possibly) concept, that will be watched again from the start, in the newly attained context of having seen it once to the end.

Marvellous!

The Tomorrow People

1973 - 1979
I loved this back in the 70s and watched a few online a while back. It was the first time I'd seen it since I was a kid and it was fabulous. Unlike some shows when re-watched years later that seem tacky and dated, this was still a really great watch!

Skippy The Bush Kangaroo

1968 - 1970
Kangaroos are extremely "thick" animals and the had a hell of a job getting the various "beasts" to do what they wanted them to do!
No Kangaroo would ever behave like the ones in the show!

The Phil Silvers Show

1955 - 1959
Despite the numerous TV repeats over the ages Phil Silvers only got the money he was paid for making the show in the first place. So sad that he and the rest of the cast were treated that way.

Circus Time

1956 - 1957
I can't think of a more overlooked series that was so significant. Like Sullivan it had all kinds of acts including musical stars of the day like The Diamonds. It rated in the top ten for young viewers.
IMDB did not have it listed until yesterday. There is one collector DVD on Amazon.com that sold out long ago. Only a clip of a Buster Keaton skit can be found online. Start searching, collectors.
Paul Winchell was a ventriloquist who hosted and also did routines with his wooden dummies.

Lift Off With Ayshea

1969 - 1974
Ayshea was hosting this at the same time she was appearing on Gerry Anderson's UFO. She was also popular enough at the time that I think she wrote a regular column for one of the UK youth magazines of the day, possibly Look-In.

The Tonight Show

1954 - Now
@GimmeVinyl Fortunately many episodes of Groucho's game show You Bet Your Life survive. It was actually a talk show disguised as a game show, so we can get a good idea of how he might have handled Tonight. Sadly, most of the Tonight Shows prior to about 1970 have been lost over time. Remarkably, most of the first Steve Allen episode survives, as does audio from the opening of Carson's first show, featuring his first monologue. But complete episodes from the 1960s, both Paar and Carson, are not that common. Fortunately one surviving clip - and one of the only 1960s ones in colour (most survive as B&W) - is from about 1965 and features Groucho as a guest.

The Dick Van Dyke Show

1961 - 1966
Watched some interviews with cast members and apparently the character of Alan Brady was based on Sid Caesar and of course Rob Petrie was based on Carl Reiner himself (Reiner was a comedy writer on Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows" and Caesar's Hour.) Hard to imagine Caesar being THAT difficult, but it must be true. I wonder what his reaction was to this characterization.

Watched this series back in 1973/1974, and taped various episodes onto audio cassette from my 14" black and white portable Hitachi Hitachi TU-75A television set, via the 3.5mm mini jack plug outlet, normally used for listening with an earpiece.....

Kept them for years....I still might have a couple of them knocking about.....

Superb series, with 'Larry' the cherry on top as narrator.

The last time i saw this show repeated on UK Television was on Channel 4 in the noughties. I have no idea why ITV3 don't repeat this sitcom? I thought John Thaw was great playing in a comic role, which is not something he usually did in his career.

The Saturday Banana

1978 - 1979
This series, from Southern TV's Southampton studio was a Saturday morning kids show, similar to, as in a bit mad (but not as good as) Tiswas. It featured a version of the Runaround game, popular as a standalone show at the time. It started early July 1978, when a bunch of us at school were picked at random to travel along from Bournemouth to be on one of the first ones. I do recall Marseille playing live (picked up a badge, promoting the Red, White and Slightly Blue LP) getting autographs from a football team playing outside the studio, a kid called Keith from our school winning a tv (b&w) on Runaround and cornering Melissa Wilkes and a male counterpart presenter. This lad was wearing a hat which he lost when he turned and fled from the mob of kids. For ages in the eighties I was convinced the lad was Graham Fletcher-Cook, but I've never found any mention of him presenting this! Also, there was a massive peeling banana outside, just in case we couldn't find the right studio I suppose......

Dracula

2020
Rated 8/10
An enjoyable romp through the classic Dracula story. Broadcast as three 90 minute episodes the show has it all, drama, suspense, a little bit of comedy and of course horror.

The BBC has done well in commissioning such a well written show (by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat of Sherlock fame). The excellent online reviews such as "bloody stunning" are well justified. What you get is an update, well shot , adaptation of the original vampire story.

Whilst not a true devotee of the horror genre I thoroughly recommend give this a viewing.
